HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials say in order to improve safety on local roadways, a contractor working for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will be applying a high friction treatment to portions of KY 189 and US 62 in Muhlenberg County beginning Thursday, resulting in temporary lane restriction for up to two weeks.

KYTC explains high friction surface treatments (HFST) are pavement treatments designed to increase friction in potentially high crash areas, resulting in motorists being able to maintain better control in both wet and dry driving conditions. A research report published by the Federal Highway Administration suggests that HFST reduce wet crashes by as much as 83 percent and total crashes by 57 percent.

Officials say Truesdell Corporation will be applying HFST to a 0.07 mile segment of US 62, also known as Everly Brothers Boulevard, in Central City around the 16 mm near Walmart, and on a 0.23 mile section of KY 189, also known as the Robert L. Draper Way, in Greenville at the 11 mile marker near the North Main Street intersection.

KYTC says the project, with a total cost of $195,195, is expected to be completed within two weeks. Motorists should prepare for lane restrictions during this period.
