Red Oak council reviews wastewater treatment plant study recommendations
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak city officials are considering the next course of action for its wastewater facilities. During its regular meeting earlier this week, the Red Oak City Council reviewed the recommendations from a wastewater treatment plant study with Dave Sturm of Snyder and Associates and recently hired Wastewater Superintendent Clint Roland. The city received the study's results late last year, including nearly $8.3 million worth of potential renovations. While the renovations could buy the city a few more years, Roland says they would likely prolong the issue and cost the city more in the long run.

FEMA opens disaster recovery centers in Pottawattamie, Shelby counties
(KMAland) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened two disaster recovery centers in southwest Iowa for people affected by the late April tornadoes. FEMA officials announced Tuesday that disaster recovering centers are now available in the Minden Fire Department Parking lot at 207 Main Street as well as at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce at 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Suite 101 in Harlan. Both centers are open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, except for Memorial Day Monday. They are also in addition to the centers already open in Nebraska, which are located in Elkhorn and Blair.
MidAmerican Energy assessing power outages following Tuesday storms, tornadoes
(KMAland) -- MidAmerican Energy officials are assessing the damage and power outages caused by severe storms and tornadoes Tuesday morning and afternoon. Much of KMAland was dealt two rounds of severe weather Tuesday as after an initial system came through early in the morning, a second line of storms roared through the region, spawning multiple tornadoes in southwest Iowa. MidAmerican Energy Spokesperson Tina Hoffman says that, as of late Tuesday afternoon, over 700 customers were without power following the outbreak.

Riverside Girl’s Track Earned Third in Class 1A State Track and Field Championship
(Des Moines, IA) – With the second-highest attended State Track and Field Meet on record, the Riverside Bulldogs were able to show off to a crowd of thousands of people while earning third place in Class 1A after tying with St. Albert with 37 team points. This meet marked a lot of firsts for Riverside while also marking a lot of top finishes at the meet overall and a few three-peats to put on the side.
Red Oak council backs engineering agreement for Oakwood Avenue water main replacement
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak officials have taken the next step to replace an issue-laden water main segment. Meeting in regular session this week, the Red Oak Council reviewed an engineering opinion of the Oakwood Avenue water main replacement between 2nd and 4th Streets and unanimously approved an engineering services agreement with Snyder and Associates of roughly $23,000 for the project. Dave Sturm with Snyder and Associates presented an approximately $185,000 cost estimate, including a 10% construction contingency and over $26,000 in engineering and administrative costs. Sturm says he had met with city water department employees and determined the area was a trouble spot needing to be replaced.
