    Canes softball, baseball, track win championships

    Tuesday May 14 was a big day for Hayward Hurricanes spring sports, as the girls softball, boys baseball and boys track and field teams all won Heart O’ North Conference championships.

    The Hurricanes softball team defeated Cameron 11-0 at Diane Hedin Field behind pitcher Brooke Laier. It was the first conference championship for a Canes softball team since 1991.

    The Hurricanes baseball team defeated Cameron 20-9 in Cameron to claim the HON championship.

    The Hurricane boys track team took first place at the Heart O’ North Championships in Spooner, while the Hurricane girls track team finished second behind Cameron.

    The Hurricanes softball team will host Ellsworth in a nonconference game this Thursday at Diane Hedin Field. The Canes will open the WIAA playoffs at Baldwin-Woodville Tuesday May 21.

    The Canes baseball team will host Ashland this Thursday and host Altoona Monday May 20.

    The Hurricanes track teams will compete in the Division 2 regional Monday May 20 at Rice Lake.
