    Canes baseball sweeps Tigers, holds down first place

    The Hayward Hurricanes baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Northwestern Tigers Friday April 26 at Iron River to maintain their hold on first place in the Heart O’ North Conference.

    The Canes entered this week with a record of 9-1 in the conference and were 11-2 overall.

    The Canes topped the Tigers 8-3 in last Friday’s first game at Iron River. Starting pitcher Nate Harrison threw five innings to get the win, giving up three hits and no earned runs, striking out 11 and walking two. Brody Roach pitched two innings in relief to get the save, giving up three hits and one earned run while walking two.

    Trent Kirkland had two hits and an RBI, Kyle Gajewski had a triple and an RBI with a sacrifice fly, Nate Harrison had two hits and two RBIs, Xzavier Stojek and two hits and an RBI, Micah Bacon had a double, and Sam Schmidt had s single.

    The Canes won game two 7-6, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take 7-5 lead.

    Starting pitcher Dawson Jorczak tossed four innngs, giving up four hits ands three earned runs, striking out four and walking four. Tyler Eaton came in and pitched the last three innings to get the win, givin up two hits and one earned run striking out one and walking one.

    Jorczak had three hits and two RBIs, Eaton hd three hits, Snider and Stojek each had two hits and an RBI, Harrison had a hit and an RBI, and Gajewski and Kirkland had one hit apiece.

    On Tuesday April 23, the Hurricanes defeated the Lumberjacks in Ladysmith, 8-5. Starting pitcher Dawson Jorczak threw four innings giving up two hits and two earned runs while striking out eight and walking two. Tyler Eaton came in and got the win, giving up two hits and one earned run in two innings, striking out one and walking one.

    Jorczak had two doubles and an RBI, Micah Bacon had two hits including a double and an RBI, Tyler Eaton had two singles, a double and two RBIs, Kyle Gajewski had two singles and an RBI, Trent Kirkland and Sam Schmidt each had a single and an RBI, Grason Crust had a single and Luke Snider had an RBI.

    On Monday April 22, the Hurricanes defeated the Oredockers in Ashland, 5-3. Nate Harrison pitched the win, giving up three hits and one earned run in four innings while striking out six and walking three. Carter Roach pitched the last three innings to get the save, giving up three hits and no earned runs, striking out two and walking none.

    Kyle Gajewski had a hit and scored two runs, Micah Bacon had a hit and an RBI, Luke Snider had two hits and an RBI, and Dawson Jorczak had an RBI.

    Heart O’ North baseball standings: Hayward, 9-1; St. Croix Falls, 6-2; Barron, 6-3; Cumberland, 5-4; Northwestern, 5-4; Spooner, 5-5; Ashland, 4-4; Ladysmith, 2-6; Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, 2-8; Cameron, 1-8.
