    Canes softball sweeps Tigers, moves into first

    The Hayward Hurricanes softball team swept a doubleheader from the Northwestern Tigers Thursday April 25 at Diane Hedin Field to move into sole possession of first place in the Heart O’ North Conference.

    The wins by scores of 8-4 and 5-1 gave the Hurricanes a 10-0 conference record.

    In game one, Brooke Laier pitched the win, striking out five and giving up one hit and four walks.

    Colby Sprenger had an RBI double, Madi Bergschneider scored three runs, Alli Coddington had an RBI double and Greta Woelber had a single.

    Laier also earned the win in game two, giving up three hits and striking out two.

    Sophia Marino had a triple, Coddington had a double and Sprenger had a single.

    On Tuesday April 23, the Hurricanes defeated Ladysmith 13-1. Kaydee Campbell pitched the win, striking out six.

    Colby Sprenger and Alli Coddington each had two hits including a double and Madi Bergschneider and Brooke Laier each had a single.

    On Monday April 22, the Hurricanes defeated the Ashland Oredockers 16-1 at Diane Hedin Field. Coddington pitched the win, giving up three hits, walking three and striking out five.

    Laier had two doubles, Nikki Miller had a double and single, Kaydee Campbell had a double, Leah Swan had two singles, and Bergschneider, Gretchen Gajewski and Sprenger each had a single.

    Heart O’ North Conference Girls Softball standings: Hayward, 10-0; Northwestern, 8-2; Spooner, 7-3; St. Croix Falls, 6-3; Barron, 5-2; Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, 3-5; Cumberland, 3-7; Cameron, 2-6; Ashland, 0-8; Ladysmith, 0-8.
