The Hayward Bass Club has announced its 2024 fishing event schedule, beginning in May. The events are:

Wednesday May 8, 5:30-8:30pm.: First League Night for Leaders Division.

Wednesday, May 15, 5:30-8:30pm.: First League Night for Masters Division.

Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m. to noon: Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Hayward Beach Park.

For 60+ years, different organizations have held this fishing-from-shore event for children 1 to 15 years old on Lake Hayward. The last organization to sponsor it was the U.S. Forest Service, before COVID. The Hayward Bass Club partnered with the Hayward Rod & Gun Club, Muskies Inc., Outdoor Creations, Hayward Bait, Walleyes for Northwest Wisconsin, and the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame to resurrect it last year.

This year Sawyer County Outdoor Projects and Education (SCOPE) is also on board and the sponsors intend to market the event much more, including through the schools. Volunteer helpers are needed on the day of the derby.

Thursday-/Saturday June 20-22, Musky Festival Fishing Contest.

During all the years of the Musky Fest, there has always been a fishing contest of some sort. Many people can remember seeing the big fish on ice in a booth on Main Street. Several groups have run this part of Musky Fest, with the Lions Club probably the longest running. Times have changed, and the contest has changed to a catch-and-release, multi-species category event. The last group to run it backed out and the Chamber asked Muskies Inc and the HBC to sponsor and run the event. This year, the sponsors are working on making it more exciting, with posted pictures in a booth on Main Street during the event on Friday and Saturday. Volunteers are needed in the booth to accept fish registrations.

Sunday, June 23, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.: HBC Annual Round Lakes Open Bass Tournament.

This highly successful event will be limited to 50 boats/teams and is headquartered at Powell’s on Round Lake. A few folks are needed to help with registration and weigh-in.

Sunday, Aug. 18, noon-4 p.m.: Annual Free Youth Bass Tournament on the Chippewa Flowage. Headquartered at The Landing Resort, thi is open to youth 10-17. This is the biggest HBC event and and about 50 folks are needed to make it happen.

Sunday, Aug. 25, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.: HBC Annual Tom Turner Benefit Open Bass Tournament on the Tiger Cat Flowage. Headquartered at the Black Iron Grill and Resort on Twin Lake, this is a benefit (20%) for the Hayward Area High School Bass Team.
