Two Hayward High School students showcased their artistic skills by creating a poster with a conservation-based theme for the annual contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation Association and Sawyer County Land and Forest Resources Committee. The theme this year was “May the Forest Be With You, Always.”

Evelyn Morse and Erin Ewert, both students of Art Teacher Kelly Egger, both created exceptional pieces of artwork, enough to earn the most votes at both the county and area competitions held earlier this winter. Those first-place wins earned them a spot at the state competition held in early March at the Wisconsin Land + Water Conference in Green Bay.

Conference attendees were able to vote for their favorite posters among nine pposters from across the state. The competition was tough, but Evelyn Morse, in the Grade 7th-9th category, placed first and will be moving on to the national competition, where her poster will represent the State of Wisconsin.

Erin Ewert’s poster also did extremely well, placing second in the 10th-12th Grade category.

The Sawyer County Land and Forest Resources Committee congratulates both students. This is the third year in a row that local artists had posters make it to the state competition, and two out of the four have won and moved on to the national competition.

The committee hopes to display this year’s posters and future winners in the Courthouse.
