Jeffrey’s Restaurant expected to reopen this summer
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Jeffrey’s Restaurant is still undergoing renovations after a fire in October. The restaurant’s owner, Jeffrey Erickson, says crews had to remove everything from the building and have been hard at work getting the electrical and plumbing up to code. He says after an inspection on Wednesday they can install the floor and walls, then start getting the restaurant put back together.
Negaunee fifth graders watch and learn Chinook salmon life cycle
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Negaunee middle schoolers said goodbye to the fish they’ve been raising since November on Thursday. Negaunee Fifth Grader Rayne Rozich released her fish Charles into the Dead River Thursday morning. Rayne said her class watched the Chinook salmon grow from small eggs into the fish they are now.
‘The Marsh King’s Daughter’ author speaks to UP students
MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Marquette Alternative High School students got the opportunity to learn about writing from a New York Times bestselling author on Wednesday. Karen Dionne is the author of the bestselling, Upper Peninsula based, novels “The Marsh King’s Daughter” and “The Wicked Sister.”
The 4th annual Marquette Art Tour takes place on Memorial Day weekend
Marquette Art Tour, a celebration of the art scene of Marquette, Michigan, will take place on Memorial Day weekend, May 25th, 2024. The self-guided tour invites locals and visitors to explore the artistic side of Marquette. Galleries and studios will showcase artistry from the Upper Peninsula and the Midwest. The tour is self-guided, with over 10 locations participating and more than 150 artists. Activities like guest pop-up artists, live art demonstrations, and workshops are scheduled.
U.P. Notable Book author Rod Sadler takes his true crime story "Grim Paradise" on a library tour
A notable author from Michigan is taking his cold-case story Grim Paradise across the Upper Peninsula on a library tour. When author Rod Sadler heard the news that he was one of ten authors to be picked for the 2024 U.P. Notable Books List, he was pleasantly surprised. The list, which honors U.P. authors and their books, started in 2019 as a "response to the lack of representation of U.P. writers in other Michigan state literary circles," said UPPAA Notable Books chairman Mikel Classen.
Olympic gold medalist Nick Baumgartner hosts book signing
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Olympic gold medalist Nick Baumgartner took to Peter White Public Library to read from his newly published memoir, “Gold from Iron” on Wednesday. In the memoir, Baumgartner discusses how he went from being a regular Yooper to a U.S. Olympic champion. The athlete spoke on the hard work it took to achieve his goals and the support he got from his community along the way.
A vinyl record take-over is coming up this May at the Ore Dock Brewing Company
A pop-up record show on Memorial Day weekend will bring a bevy of musical media to the Marquette area. Geoff Walker and Jon Teichman will cart copious crates of vinyl records to Marquette's Ore Dock Brewing Company to host their occasional pop-up pop culture swap in the inviting atmosphere of the upstairs community room. Attendees can expect a treasure trove of music-related items including vintage vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, books, show posters, and more, available for purchase or trade. The event is a collaboration between Ore Dock Brewing Company and the NMU Vinyl Record Club, providing an engaging, community-focused experience for music enthusiasts and collectors.
