HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — More students in Hartford are donning their caps and gowns, according to the school district.

The Class of 2023 had the highest graduation rate in the district’s history, with 78% of seniors graduating. The graduation rate was 73.8% in 2022 and 63.2% in 2011.

One of the causes? Superintendent Leslie Torres-Rodriguez said that expanding sports programs has helped.

“All of that fuels their engagement with academics, so we’re providing the support and we’re meeting the needs — the academic needs of our students and the social, emotional developmental needs of our students — and I think that is what a high school journey is about,” she said.
