HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A man who was found guilty of murder in Colombia has been arrested in Hartford after lying to immigration officials, ICE announced on Thursday.

The 44-year-old man, who has not been publicly named, was arrested in 2014 in Colombia for premediated homicide. He was found guilty in 2016 and sentenced to service more than four years in prison. He was arrested in 2022 in California after illegally entering the country.

At the time, he said that he’d never been apprehended by law enforcement in the U.S. or Colombia, according to ICE. He was released on interim parole in November 2022.

A year later, officials learned about his murder conviction, which was confirmed by the Colombian government this February. He was arrested on April 3 in Hartford.

“We cannot allow convicted murderers to roam freely in our New England neighborhoods,” Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons said in a written announcement. “ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing the most egregious noncitizen offenders from our communities.”
