SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – A 16-year-old from Harrisonburg, Virginia is running an ultra-marathon at the Sussex County Fair Grounds.  The “3 Days at the Fair” event began at 9 a.m. on Thursday for Nate Whiting.

Whiting will run a one-mile loop more than 200 times with his mom, dad and brother “camping along the course to cheer him on,” and providing his favorite fuel “a PBJ sandwich,” according to family friend Teri Alexander.

The high school student is running to raise funds for the Holistic Haitian Alliance charity. His parents had volunteered to provide dental care in Haiti many times.  Last year Whiting had a chance to visit the orphanage village.

After his visit, “he fell in love with the children there,” Alexander said.  The children were also in love with him, grateful for all he had done for them.  Each night he would run five miles around the orphanage village and the children would join him for a lap or two.

During his visit Whiting volunteered in the dental clinic, visited the elementary school and helped with LEGO building and robotics activities, Alexander said.

He has already raised $15,000 for  the children in the Kay Anj Village a 40 acre commune in the Hatian commune of Dekle, just outside of Cap-Haitien from a previous 104 mile ultra-marathon. This year he hopes to double the miles and the amount raised.
