San Luis Obispo MMA fighter goes professional
San Luis Obispo Mixed Martial Arts fighter Steven Sainsbury is competing in his first professional MMA bout in Long Beach on May 18. The 31-year-old San Luis Obispo native is slated to participate in a “Lights Out Extreme Fighting” event. Through this organization, former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman promotes the next wave of notable fighters as they pursue their dreams of becoming pro-athletes.

ATASCADERO — The new Atascadero High School (AHS) pool officially opened at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8. Student-athletes, school faculty, parents, and the entire Atascadero Unified School District (AUSD) trustee board were in attendance, and the excitement at the new aquatics facility was palpable. The school had been without a pool since right after Oct. 21, 2022.

Atascadero High School boys volleyball wins CIF championship
ATASCADERO — Atascadero High School (AHS) has a lot to be proud of this sports season. On Thursday, May 9, the Atascadero boys volleyball team won the CIF Central Section Division III championship by beating a familiar foe, the Paso Robles Bearcats. The Greyhounds won it with a three-game sweep by scores of 25-13, 25-18, and 28-26. The team, as a whole, had six aces, 37 kills, nine blocks, and 41 digs during the match.

Templeton High School Athlete of the Week
During the 2024 golf season, Wyatt secured his spot as one of the top golfers on the Templeton Eagle golf team. His hard work and dedication were without comparison as he arrived as much as an hour early to practice and often stayed well past the end of practice to hone his skills, often recognizing and working on the weaker aspects of his game. Wyatt’s hard work paid off throughout the year as he slowly lowered his tournament scoring average and was able to secure one of the top 25 individual qualifiers in the CIF Central Section. Wyatt’s solid play and steady demeanor helped his Eagles teammates secure a 2nd place finish in Division 2 at the Championship Tournament, losing by only 1 stroke to the Championship team. That one stroke is what makes this story!

Atascadero edges Cabrillo in extra innings CIF-CS quarterfinal thriller
LOMPOC, Calif. - Down to their final out Atascadero rallied to knock off Cabrillo 3-2 in 8 innings in a CIF-Central Section Division 2 quarterfinal baseball game. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh the Greyhounds got a break on a 2-out infield error and Jack Thompson scored from second base to tie it up.
Sports in brief: All-Ocean League golf
Atascadero won the 2024 Ocean League boys golf championship, and Greyhounds claimed the top three spots on the All-Ocean League list. Atascadero's Wesley Thomas is the Ocean League MVP, and teammates Luke Rogers and Vincent McDonald join him on the All-League First Team. The rest of the First Team is comprised of Zeke Ramos of Orcutt Academy, Nathan Schalck of Atascadero, Josue Elena of Santa Maria, Lawson Mendez of Lompoc and Evan Ladd of Atascadero.
Softball Recap: Paso Robles snaps six-game streak of losses on the road
With a playoff game on the line, Paso Robles rose to the challenge on Wednesday. They walked away with a 9-6 win over the Tulare Union The Tribe. Elie Chavez was incredible, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashlynn Domingos, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
