HARLINGEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration has released their forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season for 2024.

They are predicting 17 to 25 named storms, eight to 13 hurricanes and four to seven major hurricanes.

This aggresive forecast is due the 77% chance of a La Niña forming during the peak of hurricane season between August and October.

A low vertical wind shear and record warm sea surface temperatures contribute to hurricane growth.

There is an 85% chance of an above normal season, which is the highest issued outlook for May by the NOAA.

The percentages do not predict actual landfall, but predict how many hurricanes could form based on past seasons and current conditions.

Now is the time to make your plans for shelter at home and evacuation.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30.
