Carleton students join hundreds in ‘No Kings’ protest
About 500 people flocked to Ames Park in Northfield to rally in favor of voting early. It was cool and windy Saturday morning on Mai-Fête Island as students from Carleton College ate doughnuts, talked to local DFL candidates and worked on signs reading “No Kings” and “Power of the People.” A few hours later, they were among a crowd of more than 500 protesters in downtown Northfield. “It’s so great to see that I’m not alone, and that it’s going to be OK,” said Kate Boye-Williams, a sophomore at Carleton. “There’s all these people here that at the very least disagree with what’s going on. It’s great that there’s other people that think this, and it makes a difference.” Boye-Williams, originally from Connecticut, was one of more than a dozen students and community members present at a warm-up event leading up to the No Kings: Vote Early rally in downtown Northfield Saturday afternoon. Kaye Boye-Williams said her parents, both university professors, used to take her to protests when she was little. Here, she works on her sign she’d later take down to Ames Park. Juniors Lizzie Appelbaum and Rivers Curry helped organize the warm-up rally. Several DFL candidates made an

MSHSL changes online extracurricular eligibility guidelines for 2027-28
The Owatonna School Board at their Monday work session. During its Monday work session, the Owatonna School Board discussed changes on the horizon for extracurricular eligibility relating to its online students in grades nine through 12. During the 2025-26 school year, the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors appointed an ad hoc committee to work on and present a proposal regarding online student extracurricular eligibility, which the board has since approved. The new policy will take effect in the 2027-28 school year. The eligibility infographic provided to the board by Dr. Martina Wagner at their work session. The policy is intended to address questions of online student extracurricular eligibility and increase access for students who are fully online. Transfer rules for varsity athletes still apply, but moving forward, students in districts with superintendent’s agreements will be able to participate in activities even if they are enrolled in another school academically. However, if the same student is enrolled in another online learning program with a school that does not have a superintendent’s agreement with their “home” district, they would not be eligible to participate. Students who have already been participating in extracurricular activities prior to this new policy will

Italian exchange student immerses in local flavor
Gigi Lena came all the way from Italy to be at the Rotary duck races on Nickle Dickle Day last month. Well, not directly, but he was there for a good reason. Lena is the Waconia-West Carver Rotary’s 2026-2027 international exchange student. He was at the Rotary’s popular duck races as an introduction to the community and to experience some local flavor. The Italian student, full name Gianluigi Lena (Gigi for short) arrived here in August from Lodi, located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The city of nearly 50,000 is situated on the banks of the Adda River, southeast of Milan in an area known as the lower plain. Lena was already introduced to Rotary through his dad who is involved in Rotary in Italy and encouraged his son to make the exchange journey. Lena speaks impeccable English. He took it in third through eighth grade and has had immersive classes taught in English. So, he has immersed himself quickly here. He is playing on the Waconia High School soccer team and said he looks forward to participating in other activities during the school year.
