50th annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby to kick off this weekend
LAKE LINDEN, Mich. (WLUC) - Grab your fishing pole, the 50th annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby kicks off this weekend. The Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsman’s Association puts the event on every year and encourages everyone to bring their family and friends. People can register for a day of fishing on the lake, with a $300 gift certificate top prize for the heaviest fish, and a $200 certificate for second place.
Beach wheelchair now available for use at Ray Kestner Park
HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - A beach wheelchair is now available for residents and visitors to use for free at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park in Houghton. The City of Houghton is providing the wheelchair for seniors, people affected by disabilities and even individuals struggling with the terrain to use around the park. It can be taken on the grass, the beach, and even into the water.
Tiny home up for silent auction, built by CTE construction students
HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - You now have the chance to own a tiny home constructed by students. The Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) has an 8 by 20 by 13-foot home up for silent auction. Students of the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Construction Technology program put the home together.

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is performing routine inspections on several western U.P. bridges this week. Inspections include the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Houghton. Crews will inspect the bridge’s deck condition, substructure, and subsystems from Monday through Wednesday. Registration for Finnish American Folk School Finnish language classes now open
HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - You can now register for Finnish language classes in Hancock running throughout June. They will be held at the Finnish American Heritage Center and taught by Becky Luoma, a Finland resident. There will be three-session classes for 3-6-year-olds and 7-10-year-olds and a five-session class for adults.
