Robert Prunty is no longer the Hampton University head football coach, athletic director Anthony Henderson announced in a release Tuesday morning.

Running backs and special teams coach Trent Boykin will serve as the interim head coach for the 2024 season, the release stated. Boykin came to Hampton in 2020 after serving as the running game coordinator at Akron from 2012 to 2018. He has 28 years of college coaching experience, including stints with Boston College and Ball State.

Attempts to reach both Prunty and Henderson were unsuccessful Tuesday.

With Prunty’s departure, Hampton’s football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs will all have new head coaches in the 2024-2025 school year. Ivan Thomas and Tamisha Augustin were both hired in March to lead the Pirates’ men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams, respectively.

Prunty was Hampton’s head coach for six years and compiled a 26-29 record in five seasons (the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID).

Hampton posted a 7-3 record during the 2018 season, Prunty’s first at the helm, as an independent program transitioning from the MEAC to the Big South Conference. The Pirates’ first year in the Big South ended with a 5-7 overall record and 1-5 conference mark.

Prunty’s team saw improvement in its second year in the Big South in 2021. Hampton finished 5-6, but tallied a 3-4 record in conference play.

The Pirates’ success trended similarly when they moved to the Coastal Athletic Association in 2022. Hampton finished 4-7 with a 1-7 conference record, but showed improvement last year, finishing 5-6 overall and 3-5 in CAA play.

Prunty came to Hampton in December 2017 after seven years as an assistant at Texas Tech, Cincinnati and East Carolina. A native of Chatham, Virginia, Prunty got his coaching start at Gretna High School and Hargrave Military Academy.
