FIRST ALERT: Tracking severe storm risk this evening
FIRST ALERT MONDAY PM: It remains a First Alert Weather Day with storms in the forecast tonight. There is a Sever T-storm Watch in effect until 1AM. One of the biggest questions in tonight’s forecast is whether storms will be surface-based or elevated. Most forecast guidance continues to develop storms behind (west of) the cold front, where the atmosphere becomes more stable. If that happens, storms would likely remain elevated, with large hail as the primary threat, along with some strong wind gusts. That said, surface-based storms can’t be ruled out if they develop ahead of the front in the warmer, more unstable airmass. We’ll be watching closely for any storms that develop ahead (east) of the cold front and are able to break through the cap (a layer of warm air aloft). If that happens, those storms could quickly become severe, with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and even an isolated tornado.
