HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – The Walmart on Route 9 in Hadley was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after police received reports of a possible explosive device inside.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:38 p.m., prompted immediate evacuation of the store as police ensured the safety of patrons and staff.

According to the Hadley Police Department, the initial report of a possible explosive device inside the Walmart was received from a third party. However, no specific details regarding the device’s description or location were provided.

In response, HPD, along with assistance from Massachusetts State Police and University of Massachusetts Police Department, deployed explosive-detecting K9 units to the scene.

Following the evacuation, a thorough search of the premises was conducted by members of HPD, Hadley Fire Department, MSP, and UMPD. Fortunately, no suspicious items or activities were discovered during the search.

At approximately 5:25 p.m., after ensuring the absence of any potential threats, authorities declared the store safe for re-entry, allowing staff and customers to return.

The incident remains under investigation by HPD detectives, with support from the Commonwealth Fusion Center, as authorities work to determine the origins and credibility of the reported threat.
