Although some will be sad to miss out on Crumbl’s moonbeam ice cream cookies, the Utah-based dessert chain’s mass closures are of little surprise. While CEO Jason McGowan cited a slowing economy and Crumbl’s ill-fated foray into dirty sodas, it’s hard to ignore the unfavorable conditions under which franchise owners suffered. High growth targets and low minimum distance requirements between Crumbl locations increased internal competition. Meanwhile, prohibitions against public forum communication, including between franchisees, meant that operators were unable to discuss sales trends or experiences between stores. It’s easy to blame closures on economic trends, consumer behavior or even GLP-1s, but if franchisees feel like they’re operating blind, failure might just be how the calorically-dense cookie crumbles.
