Honor Flight brings over 80 veterans to Washington, D.C., in recent trip
NORTH COUNTY — Veterans were welcomed home on Wednesday, May 15, at the Santa Maria Airport after they took their “Tour of Honor” in Washington, D.C., courtesy of Honor Flight Central Coast (Honor Flight). Over 80 veterans made this trip to the Nation’s Capital, most of which had served during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

An 80-year-old unidentified Santa Maria man died in an afternoon collision on Highway 101 near Union Valley Parkway on Wednesday. According to information provided by the California Highway Patrol, at 12:15 p.m. a 2007 Honda Civic driven by the unidentified man failed to stop for traffic in the number two lane of Hwy 101 near UVP.

A judge on Tuesday sentenced a man to 118 years to life in prison for a crime spree in which he shot at a Santa Maria police officer, as well as at CHP officers. [KSBY]. On Nov. 4, 2020, a Santa Maria officer spotted Dustin Daniel Morales, then a wanted man, in the River Ranch apartment complex and attempted to arrest him. While struggling with the officer, Morales pulled out a gun. He managed to break free from the officer and started to run away.
Camp Roberts Fire hazard reduction and training burns
Date of Proposed Burn Window: May 25 through June 1. Where: Camp Roberts, Southern Monterey and Northern San Luis Obispo counties. The San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District (SLO County APCD) has announced a series of prescribed burns at Camp Roberts. These burns are scheduled to take place between May 25 and June 1, with the majority of the activity (approximately 8,700 acres) occurring on May 28, weather permitting. Smaller burns are also planned for May 15-17 and May 22-24.
