Famous People Born in Manhattan, Kansas
Manhattan, Kansas may be the “Little Apple,” but its most famous natives usually had to leave town before the spotlight found them. That is the fun pattern in this list. Born in a college-and-prairie city shaped by Kansas State University, Fort Riley, agriculture, and the Flint Hills, these names went on to make noise in Hollywood, the NFL, music technology, politics, comedy, and national reform. Topeka settles lawsuit with former city water worker for $34,999
Topeka city code requires a formal public vote of approval from the city's mayor and council to approve a lawsuit settlement only if it totals $35,000 or more. No vote was consequently required when city officials recently decided to pay a settlement of $34,999 to a former city worker. The city legal team on Oct. 1 finalized that settlement with Robby Mendez, former employee of Topeka's water distribution division. Topeka's media team declined to comment. "Due to the terms of the agreement to not discuss this matter, we are unable to provide any comment," said Kimberly Qualls, Topeka senior public relations specialist. Why did Robby Mendez sue the City of Topeka? Mendez filed his suit on July 2, alleging retaliation, interference and denial of procedural due process as it relates to taking federally protected medical leave, according to court documents. The city asked the court to dismiss the case on the claim of qualified immunity saying Mendez failed to state a claim in his lawsuit. The court ruled on Jan. 16 to dismiss the claims of interference and the denial of due process. It did maintain Mendez's claim of retaliation. How much has Topeka paid out in legal settlements in
