Emporia firefighters rally around one of their own after recent cancer diagnosis
EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) - Firefighters in Emporia are rallying around one of their own following his recent cancer diagnosis, which has now threatened his eyesight. The Emporia Fire Department recently announced that firefighter Greg Rausch was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma earlier in 2023. However, recently a new diagnosis of leptomeningeal disease has created a new barrier in his battle.

This follows half an inch to over an inch of liquid equivalent after the 5-11 inches of snowfall areawide Nov. 25, preceded by 1-1.5 inches of rain earlier that week.

WEATHER: More rainfall likely for area residents Thursday
More much-needed moisture is currently expected across the KVOE listening area Thursday. The National Weather Service says an incoming storm system will give area residents a cold rain late Thursday afternoon through the evening hours. Anywhere from half an inch to an inch of rainfall is possible before the system moves away.

Formal charges filed against east Emporia vehicle pursuit suspect Wednesday
Formal charges have been filed against the Emporia man who allegedly led a chase in portions of eastern Emporia Monday. The Lyon County Attorney’s Office has filed single counts of distribution of methamphetamine, distribution of marijuana, flee and elude, felony possession of drug paraphernalia and felony interference with law enforcement along with seven counts of felony criminal possession of a weapon by a felon against Alejandro Lara-Ceja Wednesday. The alleged chase went around portions of eastern Emporia before ending in the 600 block of Lakeview with Lara-Ceja’s tasering and arrest.

Sounds of the season performed at free concert inside Granada Theatre
Vocal and instrumental holiday songs, traditional and new, were played before an appreciative audience at the Emporia Granada Theatre on Thursday. Between 400-500 people attended the concert, led by Emporia native Jack Mouse on drums and his wife, Janice Borla, on vocals — and featuring an all-star cast of jazz musicians. The concert was part of the Emporia Arts Center’s annual Performing Arts Series and it was free to attend, thanks to the efforts of John and Claudia Kretsinger.
ESU women’s soccer players to see reduced playing time in Sweet 16 game against Washburn; Sailer on paid administrative leave after unspecified code of conduct violations
The Emporia State women’s soccer team will have some personnel adjustments for its Sweet Sixteen NCAA Tournament game against archrival Washburn this week. ESU Athletics says an unspecified number of players violated the school’s student-athlete code of conduct as outlined in the department’s Student-Athlete Handbook. As a result, those players will be sanctioned through the use of reduced playing time. The violations have not been specified.
Faulty furnace motor, bad electrical outlet prompt Emporia Fire responses
Emporia firefighters say the early Wednesday fire reported at Four Seasons was not actually a fire, and they say a fire Tuesday night in west Emporia was small in nature. Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says there was a faulty furnace motor at 1915 West 24th, which initially triggered a full structure fire response by Emporia, Americus and Olpe departments around 6:20 am. Once it was determined the issue was a furnace motor instead of a fire, Americus and Olpe were canceled before they arrived and most Emporia firefighters at the scene were told to return to service.
