GREENWOOD, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- UPDATED (9:55 a.m.)- Greenwood residents will be allowed to re-enter their homes at 10:30 a.m., according to a Midland County spokesperson. Additionally, FM 1379 is set to reopen at that time.

Officials said the fire at the Targe gas plant, located at 4801 FM 1379, was caused by a gas leak. First responders began fighting the fire around 6:30 p.m. on April 16 and said the fire was out by 6:30 this morning.

“After the leak caught fire, our priority was to swiftly address the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved,” said Justin Bunch, Fire Marshal for Midland County. “We are grateful for the collaborative effort with the Midland Fire Department and are relieved that there were no injuries reported.”

The Midland County Sheriff’s Office, with help from the Midland County Northeast Volunteer and Greenwood Volunteer Fire and Midland Fire Departments evacuated parts of Greenwood overnight after a fire broke out at a gas plant.

Crews said a one-mile radius around the scene, near the intersection of FM 1379 and ECR 120 was cleared, and residents were asked to stay away from the area as crews worked to battle the fire. Authorities said the plan overnight was to allow the gas to burn out of the system before trying to tackle the flames.

No injuries were reported, and volunteers were allowed to fly drones over the area to help keep an eye on the flames without putting crews at risk.

We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
