J.L. Mann boys tennis appeals after SCHSL announces forfeit of Upper State semifinal win

The SCHSL ruled Wednesday that two-time defending state champion J.L. Mann boys tennis had to forfeit its high school Upper State semifinals victory against Dorman over potential rules violations.

The SCHSL sent out a news release two hours before what was supposed to be a 5 p.m. Wednesday start of Mann’s home match against T.L. Hanna in the Class AAAAA Upper State championship, calling it “postponed until further notice” as Mann has asked for an appeal of the decision.

“As a result of Dorman High School questioning the relative order of J.L. Mann High School boys’ tennis lineup,” the SCHSL stated in the release, “it was determined that the SCHSL rules regarding establishment of the initial ladder is not in compliance. J.L. Mann is now required to forfeit its Monday, April 29, 2024, contest versus Dorman High School.”

Mann’s appeal will be heard at 1 p.m. Friday by the SCHSL Executive Committee.

State championships are scheduled for Saturday in Florence. The SCHSL stated that news conferences Thursday ahead of the title games will now include only Class AA, Class AAA and Class AAAA.

J.L. Mann beat Dorman, 6-0, on Monday and was the No. 1 seed from Region 1.
