The East Carolina baseball team made a jump in the national rankings to No. 7 earlier this week after going 4-0 last week.

The Pirates earned wins over William & Mary in the midweek before sweeping visiting Wichita State over the weekend.

ECU (31-8, 11-4 AAC) is off to its best start since the 2004 team started 33-6.

The Pirates hosted No. 21 N.C. State on Tuesday in a matchup of two top 25 teams. ECU won the first meeting on April 2 in Raleigh, 12-4.

ECU returns to AAC play with a road series at Memphis beginning on Friday.

    ECU softball

The ECU softball team picked up its third series win in American Athletic Conference play this season after taking two games from South Florida last weekend.

The Pirates split Saturday’s doubleheader with the Bulls, falling 1-0 in the first game before clinching the series with an 8-1 victory in the second game at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium in Greenville.

The Pirates (32-16, 9-12 AAC) earned their ninth league win of the season, which marks the most AAC victories in a single season since ECU joined the American before the 2015 season.

Kylee Schojan hit her first career home run, a three-run blast to center field in the second game.

USF earned a win in the opener with the help of a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning that scored the game’s lone run. The Pirates only had two hits while the Bulls tallied three. USF stranded seven runners, while the Pirates had three runners in scoring position through the first four innings but couldn’t find a way to finish the job.

The Pirates finished the regular season on Monday with a 15-12 loss at Mercer.

ECU (4-12, 1-5 AAC) got hat tricks from Ellie Bromley and Frances Kimel but were unable to hold off a hot second half from the hosts as Mercer pulled away to win.

The Pirates led 4-3 after the first quarter, then 8-6 at halftime. Mercer took control of the game by scoring six unanswered goals in the third quarter to erase the ECU lead. The Pirates outscored Mercer in the final frame, 4-3, but it wasn’t enough.

At one point, the Bears scored eight consecutive goals.

The Pirates made one last effort at a comeback with Kimel scoring a pair of goals and Riley Matthiesen scoring one to make it a three-goal deficit with under three minutes remaining. Kimel’s goals made her the first ECU player to score at least 30 in a season twice in a career. She finished the season with 31 goals.

    PCC softball

The Bulldogs had their 10-game winning streak snapped after losing both games of a doubleheader to Wake Tech last Saturday.

PCC (17-12-1) lost 4-3 in 11 innings in the opener, then dropped a 16-11 decision in the second game.

Katie Smith homered twice for PCC, which knotted the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning of Game 1 with the help of a three-run inning. The Bulldogs didn’t score again, however.

Wake Tech’s Leah Correll pitched all 11 innings and struck out a career-high 14 batters. She remains in the lead among Region 10 DII players in strikeouts with 149.

Riley Hutchinson led things off for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the 11th and reached base via a walk. She advanced to third on a pair of passed balls, but Correll got Madison Hall to fly out to center field to end the game.

PCC played at Wake Tech again on Tuesday.
