These late-April and early May events offer music, theater and family fun for Greenville-area residents. Here is a sampling.

Dogwood Festival

The Farmville Dogwood Festival continues through Sunday in downtown Farmville. The annual event includes amusement rides, music, entertainment, food and arts and crafts. The Dogwood Bash will be held today on West Horne Avenue, adjacent to the athletic field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Featured performers include Austin Snell, Jake Sutton Band and Grand Ole Opry’s Lauren Alaina. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show. ‘Descendants’

South Central High School will perform “Descendants,” based on the Disney Channel original movies, at 2 and 7 p.m. today at 570 Forlines Road, Winterville. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults. Call 321-3232. “Descendants” will be performed this weekend at Greene County Wellness Center, 84 N. Perry Drive, Snow Hill, with shows at 2 and 7 p.m. today and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for ages 10 and younger. Visit gckidsonstage.org.

Spring Fling

St. James United Methodist Church, 2000 E. Sixth St., will hold its Spring Fling beginning at 6:30 a.m. today. It will include a yard sale with household items and children’s clothing, toys and books. Books for adults, along with sweet and savory foods, will be on sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. A chicken dinner sale will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tickets are $12. ‘Mean Girls’

J.H. Rose High School’s Rampant Theatrical Company will present “Mean Girls” at 2 and 7 p.m. today at 600 W. Arlington Blvd. Rated :G-13. Tickets are $6 for students and senior citizens at $12 for general admission. Visit onthestage.tickets/show/rampant-theatrical-company.

Comic book show

The G3ektacular Comic Book and Toy Show will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today at the Greenville Convention Center, 303 S.W. Greenville Blvd. The free event features comic book and toy vendors and creators.

‘Sister Act’

D.H. Conley High School will stage “Sister Act,” a musical based on the hit 1992 film, at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday at 2006 Worthington Road. Tickets are $10. Visit gofan.co/app/school/NC572.

Color Run

Aces for Autism, 654 Worthington Road, Winterville, will host a Color Run/Walk 5K from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today. The event will include vendors, food and face painting. Cost is $30 for adults and $15 for ages 12 and younger. Visit facebook.com/AcesforAutismNC.

Lab open house

The Queen Anne’s Revenge Conservation Lab, 1157 VOA Site C Road, will host its annual open house from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today as part of the NC Science Festival. Conservators and archaeologists will demonstrate how they use chemistry, physics, technology, art and more to recover and conserve artifacts through fun hands-on educational activities. Día del Niño

The Association of Mexicans in North Carolina will host its 19th annual Día del Niño from noon to 3 p.m. today at Wellcome Middle School, 3101 N. Memorial Drive. The celebration of children, families and reading features games for families, piñatas, music, giveaways for the kids, food (children will be provided lunch) and more. The event is free and open to the public.

Poetry Month

The second annual Big Poetry East will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday at Emerge Gallery and Art Center, 404 Evans St. Held in recognition of National Poetry Month, the event will feature readings by several area poets, and an open mic will be open to participants. Winterville concert

The Winterville Historical and Arts Society will host Lightnin’ Wells and his “Smile-A-While Gang” in concert from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Winterville Depot, 217 Worthington St. A second performance in the free, spring concert series will be held at 7 p.m. May 21 and will feature Lipbone Redding.

Historic walking tour

Local historian and director of Farmville’s May Museum, Roger Kammerer, will lead a walking tour of historic Greenville beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday at 500 Evans St. The tour will include numerous stops in the downtown area, from Pitt Street to Cotanche, with stops at some of the oldest structures in town plus the new Sycamore Hill Memorial on the mall.

Choral Society

Greenville Choral Society and New Carolina Sinfonia will present “Illuminare” and other works by Elaine Hagenberg at 4 p.m. Sunday at Oakmont Baptist Church, 1100 Red Banks Road. The free performance will feature the Children’s Chorus, Youth Chorale, Bella Voce and Concert Choir, along with a special appearance by the composer. Visit greenvillechoralsociety.com.

‘The Great Gatsby’

Farmville Community Arts Council will present “The Great Gatsby” at 7 p.m. May 2-4 at Paramount Theatre, 3723 N. Main St., Farmville. Additional matinee performances are scheduled for 3 p.m. May 4-5. Art Walk

First Friday ArtWalk will be held from 5-8 p.m. May 3. Several galleries will host receptions for new exhibitions, and free rides will be available on the Emerald Express Trolley. Emerge Gallery, 404 Evans St., will host and opening for its annual Rock the Bus exhibit featuring the work of Pitt County Schools art educators. Greenville Museum of Art, 802 Evans St., will host Pitt Community College’s Graphic Design and Associate of Fine Arts Portfolio Shows. ECU’s Gray Gallery, 2000 Jenkins Fine Arts Center, Fifth Street, will celebrate illustration majors who are graduating from ECU’s School of Art and Design.

‘The Lion King Jr.’

The E.B. Aycock Middle School Theatre Club will present Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.” at 7 p.m. May 3-4, with 2 p.m. matinees May 4-5 at South Central High School auditorium, 570 Forlines Road, Winterville. Tickets are $10 in advance at the Aycock school office,1325 Red Banks Road, or $15 at the door.

Family Campout

River Park North, 1000 Mumford Road, will host Family Campout from 6 p.m. May 4 through 9 a.m. May 5. Families can bring their own tents, sleeping bags and any additional camping supplies to set up beside one of the ponds. Park staff will provide a night of games, hiking, hot dogs and s’mores. Barbecue, Blues & Brews

Greenville Recreation and Parks Department is hosting the Barbecue, Blues & Brews Festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 4 at Wildwood Park, 3020 Blue Heron, Greenville. The outdoor community event will feature BBQ vendors, live music, a beer garden and bounce houses. Admission is free.

Derby Dash Bash

Rocking Horse Ranch, 1721 Blue Banks Farm Road, will host its annual Derby Dash Bash fundraiser from 4-9 p.m. on May 4 at the ranch. Funds raised will support the therapeutic riding program. Visit tinyurl.com/y9m6kfan for more information and to purchase tickets.

Critters Undercover

Greenville Recreation and Parks Department will host Critters Undercover from 9-11 a.m. May 4, at River Park North, 1000 Mumford Road. Participants will explore the variety of reptiles and amphibians that live in the park. Registration deadline is noon May 2. Cost is $3 for city residents and $5 for others. Paint in the Park

Greenville Recreation and Parks Department and the Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge will host Paint in the Park from 1-3 p.m. May 5 at the Town Common, 105 E. First St. The bi-annual, plein air paint event is free. Artists are able to come up to the stage at 3 p.m. to show off their creations. Visit emergegallery.com.

Kayak demo

Concert on the Common

The Concert on the Common series will present The Stranger: Billy Joel Tribute at 6 p.m. May 9 at the Town Common, 105 E. First St. Captain Mike: Shipwrecked — A Tribute to Jimmy Buffet will be featured at 6 p.m. May 23. The series will feature a half dozen shows through July. Events will feature food trucks and other vendors, along with adult beverages. Pets are welcome. No coolers or glass containers are allowed. Visit concertonthecommon.org.

African-American Music Series

Emerge Gallery and Art Center, 404 Evans St., will host the final African-American Music Series concert of the season at 7 p.m. May 10. The free concert will feature Carroll V. Dashiell Jr. Visit emergegallery.com.

Bath fest

Art meets history at Bath Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 11 at Bonner’s Point on Main Street in Bath. It features pirate living history, arts and crafts, a street fair, student art show and live musical entertainment, The Beaufort County 4-H chicken and rabbit show also are part of the day’s events. Mother’s Day boating
