Fike High senior Ja’Khyla Ruffin was one of three state qualifiers for the Golden Demons track and field team last weekend, making her this week’s Farris & Thomas Student-Athlete of the Week.

Ja’Khyla placed fourth in the girls discus Saturday at the NCHSAA 3-A East Regional meet at Croatan High in Newport, throwing a season-best 103 feet, 6 inches. That earned her a spot in this Saturday’s NCHSAA 3-A championships in Greensboro. Ja’Khyla nearly qualified for states in shot put as well, coming in fifth at the regional with a heave of 33-3.5.

The daughter of Latonya Murray of Wilson, Ja’Khyla has a 4.0 GPA at Fike where she has taken all Honors courses since 10th grade. She also played basketball and softball for the Golden Demons.

Ja’Khyla works part-time at Family Dollar and enjoys cooking in her free time.

She plans to attend Pitt Community College next year and, upon graduation in two years, intends to transfer to East Carolina University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
