GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Greensboro police are asking for the public’s help in an investigation of a crash and shooting on Interstate 840 between Burlington Road and Interstate 40/Interstate 85 that resulted in a death.

William Christopher Murphy, 21, was taken to a hospital after the crash and died on Sunday.

Investigative reports verified Murphy was the victim of a shooting.

Investigators are seeking dash camera video or still images of two vehicles seen speeding from the Graham and Burlington area toward Greensboro on I-40 westbound between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on April 25.

One vehicle is described as an older model black Pontiac Grand Prix, and the other vehicle is described as a red/burgundy newer model sedan. It is possibly a Honda with dark-tinted windows.

The vehicles were speeding and being driven carelessly and recklessly, police say.

The black Pontiac Grand Prix was involved in a crash on I-840, and serious injuries were reported.

The red/burgundy newer model sedan reportedly drove away.

On Wednesday, the Greensboro Police Department released a statement saying a homicide investigation is underway due to the death of a driver.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the two described vehicles that morning to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at (336) 373-1000.
