The 2024 State Leadership Conference of HOSA — Future Health Professionals was held earlier this month at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. A number of schools were represented and will be sending students on to the National Conference in Houston in June.

The club’s familiar name is no longer an acronym, the group rebranded itself in 2022 to HOSA — Future Health Professionals. They wrote, “HOSA — Future Health Professionals is not a club to which a few students in school join. Rather, it is a powerful instructional methodology that works best when it is integrated into the Health and Biomedical Science curriculum and classroom.”

“The mission is to empower HOSA-Future Health Professionals to become leaders in the global health community, through education, collaboration, and experience.”

That mission is all the more critical, they said, considering the acute shortage of qualified workers in the health care industry and a rate or retirement that outpaces replacement. “This shortage has been amplified by the pandemic… HOSA — Future Health Professionals is a viable solution to health industry shortages.”

Surry County Emergency Services Director Eric Southern said Tuesday night during the county’s budget session that he was proud of the strong contingent of participants who represented this area. Their hard work was commendable, and he felt they were all deserving of recognition.

Students at Mount Airy Middle School brought home an armful of awards from Greensboro including first place wins for Lucy Bennett and Victoria Hill in Health Education, Emmalee Shumate for Foundations of Medical Reading, Olivia Brintle for Health Career Exploration, as well as Phin Slate, Jade Snow, Lila Overby, and Elena Huang for Foundations of HOSA bowl.

Gentry Middle School students Lyla Lyons and Cambrey Newman competed and won third place in the Health Career Displays competition.

In the high school competitions, North Surry High School was recognized as a Gold Star Chapter for the first time which signifies they have demonstrated the organization’s core values of Learn, Lead, Serve, and Innovate.

Mount Airy High School’s Sabrina Brown took second place in Clinical Specialty with Garrett Routh ranked in the top ten as well. Jack Day took third place in the Nursing Assistant category and Logan Wood was an Educational Symposium Presenter.

Student Jordin Beasley placed first in the ATC AAFP Family Medicine Career Test, Lukas White won the ATC Biology Test, took third in Anatomy & Physiology Test, and top 10 in Medical Terminology.

Jordin Beasley and Addison Southern were recognized with the Barbara James Service Award Gold Level and the Early College Chapter ranked in the top 10 in the HOSA Happenings — Chapter Award.

Southern said the Yadkin Valley was well represented not only by student participants but also local sponsors and presenters. Northern Regional Hospital was the Platinum Level sponsor and Hugh Chatham Health and Surry County EMS were among the Bronze Level sponsors.

He also said that groups from Northern Regional Hospital, Surry County 911 Communications, Surry County EMS, and Surry County Medical Examiner’s Office all presented educational sessions during the conference. Hugh Chatham Health, Northern, and Sury EMS also set up educational demonstrations and tables for students to explore healthcare options.
