Site work continues for Sheboygan Gartman farm housing project
SHEBOYGAN – Site work continues on south side farmland to prepare for the construction of more than 1,500 housing units. The Common Council approved Aug. 17 a construction contract with Mashuda Contractors for additional site grading and earthwork for the Gartman and Poth farms redevelopment project. At about $5.89 million, Mashuda offered the lowest of two bids. The area needs a lot of soil to prepare for utilities, city engineer Kevin Jump explained at the Aug. 10 Public Works Committee meeting . If the city can find soil, the cost of the contract will go down. The first milestone for this phase will include full construction of several ponds, on-site excavation, fill and compaction, and seasonal stabilization, according to the contract. That must be completed by Oct. 15. All of the work for this phase must be completed by Oct. 15, 2028. Mashuda also won the bid for the project’s first phase of sitework in spring 2025, bidding nearly $3.3 million. Both are being paid by Tax Incremental District 23’s land improvements fund, according to city documents. Local golfers had another opportunity Thursday to hit the links in the name of a good cause. Door County Habitat for Humanity hosted its seventh annual Home-in-One Golf Outing at Idlewild Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay, with proceeds benefiting the organization’s affordable housing projects on the peninsula. The event carries extra significance for Executive Director Lori Allen, and not just because of her role with Door County Habitat for Humanity. Dozens of local businesses and Allen’s neighbors donated time, raffle prizes and money to make the event a reality. One of the holes was sponsored by Allen’s neighbor, Keitha McDonald, who dedicated it to her late husband, Mac. She says Allen’s passion for the organization made it an easy decision to support their friend.
