GREENEVERS — The Greenevers Town Board of Commissioners discussed several projects that are in progress at its monthly town hall meeting held Monday, April 15.

The long-awaited update of the old fire station is finally underway. Faith Roofing & More out of Magnolia was awarded the project after bidding against five other companies. The project began on April 15 and will consist of mostly cosmetic work like painting and placement of new floors, according to Town Clerk Emma Brinson. Once completed, it will be used as a board chamber. Monthly town hall meetings will be held there instead of the Greenevers Community Building.

In a previous meeting, the board decided to hire a contractor to clean up the ditches in town. Dowdy’s Hauling was chosen and is currently working to complete the project. As of the time of the meeting, Cedar Lane was already completed. Dowdy’s was working on Clinic Circle, and Carr Town Road had not been started yet. The project was scheduled to be complete by the end of April.

In an effort to better the town as a whole, the town and planning board decided to work with the Eastern Carolina Council of Government (ECC). ECC is governed by a board made up of one elected official from each member county, and they guide programming and discuss regional challenges.

“They do a variety of different kinds of things. They help cities, towns, and counties with different types of things like dealing with aging, planning, and other town issues. They help bring answers to common questions and problems they may have,” Brinson explained.

Their purpose is to help guide their members to make decisions that will positively impact their municipality. Greenevers plans to work with them to outline their ordinance that helps them manage how property is subdivided in town.

The board approved a grant for funding that will be used to improve some of the houses in town. The grant was awarded by The Department of Commerce, Rural Economic Development Division. The total grant was a total of $800,000.

The town previously allowed residents to apply in hopes that their home would be chosen. After a review and voting process, five houses were chosen. Three of those houses will be reconstructed and two of the homes rehabilitated. According to Brinson, the work won’t start until 2025.

The board of commissioners meet the Tuesday after the second Sunday of the month at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be held on May 14.
