West Stockbridge rent control board considers substantial trailer park rent hike
On Wednesday, the rent control board in West Stockbridge will consider a request from a mobile home park owner to increase rents by more than 200%. Published reports say the owner, Tom Lennon, wants to boost lot rents from the current $241 a month to nearly $800. (Tenants are responsible for obtaining their own mobile homes.) Lennon cited improvements, the appraised value of the property and rising costs of doing business as the reasons.
Monterey voters approve $5.5 million budget for fiscal year 2025, reject move to establish a new tax district for Lake Garfield
On Saturday, Monterey, Massachusetts held its annual town meeting at the firehouse. The Southern Berkshire community of around 1,000 sits in the wooded hills east of Great Barrington. The 22-article warrant put before voters included a roughly $5.5 million operating budget for fiscal year 2025, just under a 7% increase over the prior year. It was the first town meeting for Monterey administrator Roger MacDonald, who began in March. He spoke with WAMC.

Berkshire County activist attempting to support Palestinian family trapped in Gaza with fundraiser ahead of further Israeli military action
A Berkshire County woman has personal ties to a fundraising effort to help a Palestinian family trapped in the Southern Gaza city Rafah evacuate to neighboring Egypt. Lillian Volat of Great Barrington, Massachusetts is promoting a $67,000 effort to help her friend Aya Al-Ghazzawi and her 14-member family escape the Israeli military campaign that has killed around 35,000 since the October 7th Hamas attacks. Volat, who has worked to organize Pro-Palestinian demonstrations through the Anti-Imperialist Solidarity group, knows Al-Ghazzawi through her time working with the International Centre for Water Management Services in the Middle East. She spoke with WAMC.
Brookside Road Bridge closed until further notice
According to a statement from the Great Barrington Police Department, the bridge on Brookside Road will be closed until further notice. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will announce when the bridge is reopened.
