Keeping it fresh in Great Barrington: Farmers’ Market opens for new season
Great Barrington — The town’s Farmers’ Market opened for a new season on Saturday, May 11 at its location at 18 Church Street. According to Farmers’ Market Manager Dennis Iodice, this is the 34th year for the market, with 28 vendors participating this year. “The market has endured for all these years because we have amazing food, we have an arts market next to us, and we have amazing vendors,” Iodice told The Berkshire Edge. “The market has become kind of a third space in Great Barrington. You have your home, you have your work, and you have the Farmers’ Market as a place to be with your community.”

The Pittsfield, Massachusetts city council is starting budget hearings for the new fiscal year that begins in July. It’s the first time through Pittsfield’s annual fiscal planning cycle for Mayor Peter Marchetti as the city’s chief executive after many years as city council president. The $205 million in expenses laid out in the document represents an over $10 million increase from the prior year, up just over 5%. Marchetti’s budget comes after calls from the city council to deliver as close to a level-funded budget as possible given rising cost of living expenses for residents. Berkshire County Historical Society receives preservation grants
Pittsfield — The Berkshire County Historical Society (BCHS) has received a $10,000 historic-preservation grant from Preservation Massachusetts in association with the 1772 Foundation. In addition, BCHS has received a $15,000 grant from the Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick Trust. These grants will be used to replace lost historic louvered shutters to Herman Melville’s historic home, Arrowhead. Restoring these important architectural elements is in keeping with BCHS’s mission to preserve and interpret Arrowhead returning the house to its Melville-era (1850s–1860s) appearance.
