    BASEBALL

    Grand Rapids 6, Rock Ridge 2

    GRAND RAPIDS — The Thunderhawks improved to 4-2 with a dominant performance on the mound from senior Dom Broberg, who threw six innings and allowed three hits to the Wolverines. Broberg struck out six batters for the win, senior Gavin Moen threw one inning of relief for Grand Rapids. Another Thunderhawk senior that had himself a day was Kyler Miller, who hit a two-run homer, drew a walk and swiped two bags for the Thunderhawks. Ari Lamppa and Jake Garski each had two hits in the win.

    Thunderhawks head coach Bill Kinnenun liked what he saw from his starting pitcher from both the mound and with the bat.

    “It was Dom’s best outing of the season. He had a little bit of velo and got his changeup working. At the plate, he’s been seeing the ball well all season.”

    The Thunderhawks improved to 4-2 on the year and travel to take on 3-8 Anoka on Friday. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 4, Hibbing 1

    The Titans won their second in a row with a 3-run win over Hibbing. GNK (4-5) is back on the diamond Friday, at home against the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers (2-2).

    Hill City-Northland, Northwoods (No Scoring available)

    HILL CITY— The Hornets were scheduled to face the Northwoods Grizzlies at home on Thursday. No scoring data was available following the game.

    Deer River, Cass Lake-Bena

    CASS LAKE— The Warriors traveled to Cass Lake to face the Panthers on Friday. Results were unavailable at publication.

    SOFTBALL

    Rock Ridge 11, Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 0

    COLERAINE— GNK could not figure out Wolverines’ starting pitcher Taylor Morley, who only allowed two hits to the Titans while striking out nine. GNK’s Ava Johnson took the loss for the Titans against the 11-3 Wolverines. Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin (5-5) will host undefeated Aitkin (5-0) on Friday.     Grand Rapids 2, Duluth East 1

    Grand Rapids girls softball turned in their third consecutive victory with a 2-1 win over Duluth East on Wednesday, just a day after taking down Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin 4-0 to win their last two on the road.

    Addie Linder is a true ace for the Thunderhawks, taking the ball in both matchups and stifling the GNK and Duluth East offenses.

    Against GNK, Linder pitched a complete game shutout, while allowing only one hit and striking out 11 Titan batters. Linder was the force to be reckoned with at the play as well, turning in two hits, including a double. Adrienne Venditto had two hits including a double while scoring twice in her first game back from an ankle injury.

    Against the Greyhounds in Duluth, Linder pitched another gem, going the full seven innings on the mound again and holding Duluth East to a single run on three hits. She struck out another ten batters, giving her 21 K’s in her last two games. Linder was once again in the mix at the plate, helping her own pitching effort with another two hits and an RBI after Venditto hit a triple to open the sixth inning.

    Linder struck out the final two batters in Duluth to secure the win for the Thunderhawks, bringing them to 5-5 this year.

    Grand Rapids is at Cherry on Friday. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    Hill City-Northland 13, Pine River-Backus 3

    HILL CITY— The Storm welcomed Pine River-Backus to town with a ten-run win over the Tigers and improved to 5-3 on the season. Shaley Pearson pitched a shutout for the Storm, allowing three hits in six innings with the three runs coming off of a fielding error. Charity Berg had four hits in five at-bats and drove in three runs in the win. They are at Carlton/Wrenshall next Tuesday.

    Blackduck 11, Deer River 0

    DEER RIVER— The Warriors remained winless at 0-7 after losing to 6-2 Blackduck at home on Tuesday. Deer River will challenge Chisholm (0-5) next Monday on the road with each team in search of their first win of the season.

    TRACK AND FIELD

    Greenway/Nashwauk/Keewatin

    Greenway/Nashwauk/Keewatin participated in the Two Harbors Invitational track and field meet on Tuesday, and took second place overall in both the boys and girls events with scores of 98 and 113 respectively.

    Gage Roberts (17.93) won the 110m hurdles with a personal best and took first in the 300m hurdles with a time of 43.46.

    The GNK 4x400m relay team consisting of Gage Roberts, Jeremy Huff-Metso, Preston Smith and John Duffy won comfortably with an eight second lead over the second-place finishers.

    Duffy and Huff-Metso placed first and second respectively in the long-jump, with Duffy getting the longer jump of 20-01.50, over his teammate Huff-Metso at 18-0.175.

    The Titan girls were second-place finishers at the Two Harbors invite as well, highlighted by their first and second place finishes in the 1600m race won by Lola Champlin (5.34.95), and Taylor Covier (5.39.67), which were both personal bests for the runners.

    Frankie Cuellar was impressive with the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 29-06.00, and placing third in the discus throw, with a toss of 91-00. Teammate Sydney Goss was the second-place finisher with a discus throw of 95-07. Senior Layla Miskovich was impressive in the triple jump, placing second in the with a distance of 31-03.00 in the event.

    Grand Rapids

    HIBBING— The Thunderhawks participated in a Lake Superior Conference meet in Hibbing on Tuesday, placing first in the boys events with an overall team score of 67, and the girls taking second place, with a score of 39.

    Thunderhawks’ senior Thomas Pogorelc set a new personal best when he won the 100 meter dash in 11.97 seconds to finish first out of 55 competitors in the event. Pogorelc set another personal best when he also won the 200 meter race with a time of 23.95, the top score out of 37 runners and just ahead of his teammate Tadi Taguta, who finished second with a time of 24.08. Pogorelc, or “Tommy” has been the “senior surprise” this year for the Thunderhawks according to head coach Matt Sandys, and he “gets better every time he competes.”

    Brenden Sylvester set a personal best in the 800 meter race, winning with a time of 2.09.66, and he would set and win another in the 1600 meters, finishing at 4.37.71.

    Sylvester left his coach impressed after his performance.

    “Brendan Sylvester killed it in the 1600 with no one even close to him,” added Sandys, who also said he’s excited to see what his 4x200m relay team can build off of after a victory on Tuesday.

    “I'm excited to see what a group of guys can do as we have a pretty good 4x 200 team that placed 1st and our distance crew is doing well,” Sandys said.

    Mathew Johnson and Kale Fairchild each set personal bests in the 3200 meter race and Aaron McMullen would set a personal best in the 300m hurdles while placing second in the 110m hurdles event.

    Tadi Taguta won the long jump with a leap of 19’ 8, and Fynn Schlict and Reid Ketola set personal bests in the triple jump, placing first and second in the event.

    Hibbing was the dominant team in the girls’ events, but Grand Rapids owned the hurdles on their home track. Ellee Nelson (17.28), Riley Toivonen (18.26), and Aubrie Hoard (19.64) took three out of the top-four spots in the 100m hurdles, and Ellee Nelson (51.44) would be the first-place winner in the 300m hurdles as well. Grand Rapids finished second in the 4x100m and 4x800m relay events.

    The Thunderhawks home track and field event Thursday was cancelled due to inclement weather.

    BOYS LACROSSE

    Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 15, Grand Rapids/Greenway 9

    Grand Rapids, Superior

    CLOQUET— The Lumberjacks remained undefeated at 6-0 after defeating the Thunderhawks 15-9 at home. Grand Rapids is still seeking their first win of the season, and played CEC close through the first period before CEC outscored them 4-0 in the second period. No additional scoring data was available. The Thunderhawks are in Superior Friday, looking for their first win. Results of the game were unavailable at publication.

    GIRLS LACROSSE

    Grand Rapids/Greenway 18, Hermantown-Proctor 5

    GRAND RAPIDS— The Lightning were dominant in their 13-goal home win over the Stealth. GRG as a team were dominant but four players wreaking havoc in the offensive zone gave Hermantown-Proctor trouble all game, led by Molly Pierce with eight points from three goals and five assists. Ryleigh Sherlock and Barrie Barr each scored four goals for GRG and newcomer Mercury Bischoff scored a hattrick for her new team in the big win.

    GRG (5-2) have now won five in a row and look to continue that streak Monday at Duluth Marshall (2-0).

    BOYS GOLF

    Grand Rapids

    SUPERIOR, WISC.— The first half of the Lake Superior Conference meet was held Wednesday at Nemadji Golf Course in Superior. The Low score was Peyton Menzel of Hermantown with one-under par 71. Will Shermoen was second with par 72. Other Rapids’ scores were Zach Roy and Colton Stupar 78, Drew Stanley 83, Marco Rolle 85 and Carter Casey 88. Grand Rapids is in third place currently at 311 while Cloquet leads with 304 and Hermantown next at 308. Other first day totals were Proctor 320, Hibbing 325, Duluth Marshall 340 and Superior 345. The final round will be played at Pokegama Course on Wed. May 8.

    BOYS VOLLEYBALL

    Hermantown 3, Grand Rapids 0

    HERMANTOWN— The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks boys volleyball team were in action Thursday in Hermantown but fell in three sets to the Hawks: 10-25, 23-25, 16-25. Assistant coach Rebekah Sutherland said the Hawks were putting a lot of pressure on Grand Rapids with their serving and that the Thunderhawks will also place more focus on developing their offense.

    MINNESOTA NORTH - ITASCA BASEBALL

    MNC-Itasca 22, Mesabi East 2

    MNC-Itasca 10, Mesabi East 0

    AURORA— The Itasca Vikings took no prisoners in their doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at Mesabi East. The Vikings outscored the Norse 32-2 in the two games played. Braxton Jorissen got the win for the Vikings from the mound, and the team collected 21 hits and 22 RBI in five innings. Thor Dunham pitched a four-inning shutout for the win in game two and the 3-6 hitters in the Vikings lineup all had multiple hits in from the heart of the lineup.

    The Vikings are 24-14 entering their final series of the season, winning their last six games and eight of their last 11 overall.

    They finish their regular season with a four-game home and away series with Hibbing Community College with an opportunity to lock up another conference title.
