Despite increased solar activity and a forecast for severe geomagnetic storms on May 12 and 13, which could lead to more visible auroras even at lower latitudes, Johnson City was unlikely to experience the Northern Lights. The city, situated far south of the usual aurora visibility zones, would need a powerful solar storm, akin to the Carrington Event of 1859, to have a visible aurora​ (NOAA SWPC)​​ (NOAA SWPC)​​ (Aurora Forecast for Canada's North)​.
