In Culinary News: The Genessee Inn

Lucky Boys may have poured its last drink, but its beloved West Bottoms space won’t stay quiet for long. The chef Aaron Cattey has taken over the former dive bar at 1615 Genessee Street and is transforming it into his own old-school roadhouse, complete with a wraparound bar, jukebox, pool tables, spaghetti Westerns and serious Kansas City barbecue. Cattey, a chef with more than 26 years in the industry, plans a straightforward counter-service menu of ribs and tips, burnt ends, or half chicken, each served with potato salad, slaw, baked beans, white bread, house pickles, and hot or mild sauce. Almost everything will be made in-house. Cattey and business partner Rob Turner are handling renovations themselves while crowdfunding the project, with plans to eventually serve the late-night crowd Monday through Saturday until 1 a.m., and fingers crossed, plan to be open by Thanksgiving. Happy Halloween, Kansas City. Here are your weekly frightful violations at Kansas City-area restaurants — from leaky sinks to food kept in refrigerators longer than the health code says. Health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City-area restaurants last week. Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public. In Kansas City and Independence, each city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better. Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly after. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. They are available for Kansas City at inspectionsonline.us/foodsafety/mousakansascity/search.htm and Johnson and Wyandotte counties at portal.kda.ks.gov/Food/FoodInspectionSearch . Here are the restaurants in Kansas City and Johnson Counties that received seven or more priority and priority foundation ​violations from Oct. 18-24.
