LESS THAN TWO MONTHS AND ANOTHER BUS ACCIDENT
Less than eight weeks after an Arlie Boggs Elementary School bus crashed in Letcher County, another incident happened on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the school hosted a reception, attended by Governor Andy Beshear, to show appreciation for the first responders that helped students get to safety. Then, during the morning route on Wednesday, a bus on the same route with nine students who were on the bus that crashed in January ran into a ditch to avoid hitting a coal truck head-on. The incident happened on U.S. 119 at a place nicknamed “Rocky Point”. None of the 19 students on the bus were injured in this incident and were taken to school on a secondary bus driven by Arlie Boggs principal Freddie Terry.

Governor Beshear Visits East Kentucky as 2022 Flood Recovery Efforts Continue
The recovery efforts from the floods of 2022 continue. On Wednesday during his visits to Eastern Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear announced an effort to restore the trees lost to the floods. There are 1,500 trees that will be planted in Letcher, Perry, and Breathitt counties. The Governor said the trees will be offered at no cost to the homes, schools, businesses, and other local organizations that are eligible. The trees will be available in one- to three-gallon containers and will be four to seven feet tall. This Saturday is the first of three days the trees will be available at the Letcher County Extension Office in Whitesburg. The other two dates are March 16 in Hazard and 23rd in Breathitt County. The trees were made available through the Arbor Day Foundation’s Community Tree Recovery Program and State Farm.

The 4-H Youth Development held their Kentucky 4-H Reality Store at HCTC on Tuesday, Feb. 27, giving seventh graders from Perry County a taste of reality. The event allowed middle school students to understand the dynamics of adult finances. By simulating real-world scenarios like paying taxes, cell phone bills and insurance, the event taught students how to budget and better prepare them for real-world scenarios. "Every student has been assigned a career. The schools assign the jobs, some based on grades, some assigned randomly along with if they have a spouse or not or how many kids they have. We run them through each booth like groceries, childcare, our chance booth and show them a little bit of reality," said Tate Sasser of 4-H.
