A 35-year-old man has been indicted for second-degree murder in the death of his wife who was found dead inside a vehicle that sank last month in a Goodyear lake.

Anthony Maiorana is accused of killing Megan Maiorana on March 22 after the vehicle he was driving plunged into a residential lake near Estrella Parkway and Willis Road, authorities said.

Goodyear police officers responded about 7:50 p.m. after receiving a call that the vehicle was rapidly sinking.

“Upon arriving, the defendant was outside of the vehicle, screaming that his wife was trapped inside," according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

“Tragically, despite multiple rescue attempts by officers and bystanders, they were unsuccessful in getting the defendant’s wife out of the vehicle.”

Maiorana shared with officers they were driving back from a baseball game when the crash occurred, the MCAO release stated, adding his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.

Witnesses said prior to the crash they heard a vehicle speeding followed by screaming.

MCAO officials said the vehicle was airborne before crashing in the lake.

“I commend the brave citizens and officers in this situation who attempted to save this victim’s life,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said.

“We are pursuing this charge as a result of the husband’s reckless behavior.”

A trial is set for September of this year.
