We should build a better transportation system for Milwaukee | Letter
I was stuck inside due to the hazardous air from this year’s Canadian wildfires that are exacerbated by climate change. During that time, I was reflecting on Milwaukee’s contribution to the climate crisis through our dependence on cars. Recent Journal Sentinel coverage only solidifies my conviction: the parking pains during Summerfest, the mayor’s concerns about removing portions of Interstate 794 , proposals to reduce the Milwaukee County Transit System by 25%, and years of construction just to add a few more lanes to Interstate 94. Milwaukee does not have a broad, reliable public transit system, so I can’t really blame anyone for driving everywhere; I drive a car, too. But the transportation sector is one of the top three sources of greenhouse gas emissions in this country, and switching to electric vehicles won’t address the rise in pedestrian deaths, unsafe driving and the widening distance between us in an already isolated world. This city desperately needs real planning and resource allocation to build and improve our public transportation infrastructure. Public transit has been proven to reduce transportation related emissions. It can strengthen communities by creating jobs, connecting neighborhoods and creating equitable opportunities for all Milwaukeeans. Climate change is not slowing

Crash-Cursed Walker’s Point Roundabout Faces $1.8 Million Overhaul Showdown
After years of spinouts, skid marks and confused drivers, Milwaukee officials are finally closing in on a fix for the Walker’s Point roundabout at South Sixth, West Florida and West Virginia streets. The question on the table is simple but not cheap: shrink the roundabout into a tighter, more forgiving circle, or rip it out and go back to a traditional traffic signal. Either way, the city is looking at an estimated $1.8 million job.

Milwaukee roundabout could be replaced. That plan wins city funding OK
The possible replacement of a Milwaukee roundabout that's been the site of dozens of car crashes since 2020 has seen its funding proposal win a key city endorsement. The proposal , from Mayor Cavalier Johnson's administration, calls for spending $17.2 million from the Reed Street Yards tax incremental financing district on street work, housing programs, and other projects within or near Walker's Point. That financing district uses property tax revenue generated by Reed Street Yards, a Walker's Point business park anchored by Rite-Hite Holding Corp.'s headquarters. The Common Council's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee recommended approval for the funding proposal at its July 28 meeting, with the full council to review it on July 31. The projects to be funded include an estimated $1.8 million to redesign and improve the Sixth Street Roundabout at West Florida Street. The roundabout saw 58 crashes from 2020 through 2023, an average of nearly 15 per year, according to the city Department of Public Works. Concrete barriers used to reduce Sixth Street traffic lanes near the roundabout from four to two have reduced speeding, according to the department, with 12 crashes from 2024 through 2025. Now, department officials want to consider other measures, including

Dockless Scooter Crash Downtown Spurs Debate, City Council Action
Milwaukee is no stranger to dangerous streets and reckless driving; it is unfortunately not uncommon to see cars ripping down streets, red lights being run, broken pieces of bumpers littering intersections and makeshift street memorials for victims. While the city and county work to tackle these issues, another menace to transportation safety has emerged, but not on city streets, rather on the sidewalks bordering them.
