CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) has emphasized May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

The DoHS has teamed up with the Bureau for Behavioral Health (BBH), along with other agencies across the state and country to highlight mental health and how it plays a role in a person’s health and well-being.

Governor Jim Justice also recognized the month of May as Mental Health Awareness Month in the Mountain State.

The theme for this recognized awareness is “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World,” and deals with the issues of how life can become overwhelming and how everyone during these times need and deserve support. During these times, using a technique such as person-first language can help when dealing with individuals who need help, and the #BeThe1To campaign provides steps on how to prevent suicide.

“This month, we aim to shine a light on the importance of mental well-being in our communities. In times of struggle, it’s crucial to utilize the resources available to help our friends, family, and neighbors navigate their journey towards healing and resilience. When we extend compassion and understanding to those in need, West Virginians can bolster one another in difficult times,” said Christina Mullins, DoHS Deputy Secretary of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.

There are different resources for mental awareness, which include HELP4WV. This offers a 24/7 chat, text, and call line at 1-844-HELP4WV and will provide anyone in the state of West Virginia who is struggling with a mental health issue or addiction. This helpline also helps anyone who needs assistance, including those who are trying to better themselves, or those trying to help their loved ones and anyone in need.

There is also a separate resource called the Children’s Crisis and Referral Line, which is also provided by HELP4WV and also helps those that need assistance for youth who may be suffering from these issues.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a helpline that is open 24/7 and 365 days a year. This line gives people access to trained crisis counselors that can help with any issues of mental-health issues, addiction, and suicide. These counselors can help with any type of distress. 988 can also be called or texted if someone needs to help someone who may be suffering and is in need. 988 can also be used for Veterans who are suffering as well.

DoHS’s BBH also provides programs for behavioral and mental health for children and youth in West Virginia communities. To help with these issues, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), BBH is asking for responses from residents of the state of West Virginia about mental health services they receive.
