23-Year-Old Virginia Barnes & Noble Is Shutting Its Doors Forever Amid Other Location Closings
By Jenny Cohen,
For the past 23 years, the Barnes & Noble of Glen Allen, Virginia, has served its community, and it's all coming to an end on June 23rd. The beloved retailer is just one of several closings this year, but this store, in particular, is due to the landlord's choice of redeveloping the land.
Until Sunday, locals can enjoy major discounts, with books selling as low as $1. While Glen Allen will be without a major bookstore, a new location will be erected. Until then, there are three remaining storefronts in Richmond, all within a 30-minute drive of the Glen Allen location.
Bookworms love shopping at stores like Barnes & Noble. However, the company has announced it is closing several locations in 2024.
The good news is that these closings mean you might keep more cash in your wallet this year. Still, that's a small silver lining in the otherwise unhappy prospect of seeing a favorite retailer shut its doors.
Check this list to see if your favorite Barnes & Noble is slated to close or has already shut its doors in 2024.
The Barnes & Noble in Naperville was open for 25 years before it closed its doors for good in January.
However, there is also good news for shoppers who enjoyed the store: The retailer is actually moving to a new spot at the Prairie Market Shopping Center in nearby Oswego. The Oswego store is set to feature a new design and an updated cafe.
The Slatten Ranch Shopping Center has been home to Antioch’s Barnes & Noble for more than 20 years, but the store plans to shut down in the fall after the company decided not to renew its lease.
Book lovers won’t have to be away from their favorite store for long: The retailer plans to open a new 21,000-square-foot location in nearby Brentwood with a new layout and design.
3. San Antonio
Bandera Pointe Shopping Center said goodbye to its Barnes & Noble location to make way for a Nordstrom Rack that moved into the space.
The good news for shoppers is that there is chatter that the bookseller plans to open a new location nearby in the future.
You may not have long to visit your local Barnes & Noble if you live in Morrow.
The location on Mount Zion Road added a note to its window saying the store would be closing its doors for the last time on May 7 after almost 30 years at the location. Employees will be given the chance to work at nearby locations instead.
5. Merced, California
Merced shoppers recently learned that their beloved Barnes & Noble will close its almost 22,000-square-foot location on May 12.
The store almost closed its doors once before in 2013. At that time, the landlord agreed to lower the lease for Barnes & Noble to keep the retailer there.
6. New York
The Barnes & Noble in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan shut its doors for good on Jan. 14, following news that the building's landlord planned to redevelop the space.
The store had almost 40,000 square feet of retail space for shoppers to find books.
While some locations have closed, Barnes & Noble has committed to opening new locations. In some cases, these will be close to shuttered stores, such as in Naperville or San Antonio.
The company has also opened new locations in other cities in recent months.
A new Barnes & Noble opened in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on Feb. 7. Two other new locations — in Bridgehampton, New York, and Flower Mound, Texas — opened their doors in late 2023.
Bottom line
It may be hard to say goodbye to your local Barnes & Noble, but you can still find options to satisfy your reading habit.
For example, Amazon Prime members can save money by purchasing books through the retailer. And even if you don’t have a Prime membership, savvy shoppers can still find their favorite books online at other retailers and often get a great deal.
