GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Despite the rain, many were on hand for a day of track and field in Girard Saturday.

The Special Olympics Trumbull County Invitational took place Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium. The meet featured over 230 athletes.

Athletes competed in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m runs, along with the softball throw, shot put and long jump events.

Local coordinator Bo Greene tells us considering that the Special Olympics had not come back since the pandemic, the response was big for this year.

“Special Olympics has not come back since COVID, it really hasn’t. This year, it was really starting to come back. People are getting back involved,” said Greene.

This marked the 13th year for the Trumbull County meet, which also honored meet co-founder and former Girard-Liberty Rotary president Randy Suchanek.
