Redding Christian girls basketball advances to state championship
When the 2025-26 season started, Redding Christian girls basketball coach Scott Alexander knew he had a good team. What he didn’t know was just how good this team would become. “I didn’t think in December that we could win a title,” Alexander said. “By January, they had me believing, and definitely now.” In fact, Redding Christian hasn’t lost a game since Jan. 1, when Alexander first started to realize this team has the tools to make a deep postseason run. They did it in the Northern Section playoffs and defeated Weed in the Division VI championship game. And now, after taking down No. 3 Forest Lake Christian 52-26 in the CIF NorCal Division VI semifinal game, the Lions (29-3) are heading to the state championships. “This doesn’t come around all the time; this is only the second time that the school has been in an opportunity to win a state title,” Alexander said. “We’re excited; it’s an opportunity that these girls will remember for the rest of their lives.” The Lions didn’t waste any time building a lead against the Falcons (19-9). Redding Christian freshman guard Weslynn Skinner and senior forward Cailee Bowers combined for 10 points in the first

Bret Harte stuns Enterprise boys basketball in state playoffs
For the second time in less than a week, the Enterprise boys basketball team suffered a devastating loss. First, it was against Chico in the Northern Section championship game . And on Tuesday, March 3, in the first round of the Division IV CIF state playoffs, the No. 3 Hornets (22-7) were stunned by No. 14 Bret Harte, 57-47. Head coach Abie Ramirez didn’t see much on the court that would constitute a loss like that. Sure, the Hornets missed some shots and didn’t get the number of foul calls they would have liked, but it was something else that plagued the Hornets from the start. “I think that the energy level for us tonight was just not there,” Ramirez said. “The sense of urgency didn’t seem like it was there. It was in spurts.” Ramirez and the squad talked about energy coming into the game. The lack of energy plagued them in the overtime period of the NSCIF championship game, but after earning the No. 3 seed in the Division IV bracket of the state tournament, it seemed like the Hornets would have new life. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday. The two teams battled back and forth, with

U-Prep boys basketball beats Oroville, wins 6th NSCIF title in 7 years
University Prep boys basketball coach Taylor Angley-Holman and his staff walked into Shasta College shortly before their Northern Section championship game wearing pins on their lapels. These pins displayed the likeness of the late Rochelle Angley — the longtime U-Prep principal and Angley-Holman’s mother. The beloved principal, who was part of U-Prep's founding group, died in July 2025 . Ms. Angley, as she is known, was always there to cheer on her Panthers, especially in the biggest moments. “My mom was at the school when it first started, and she started the softball, basketball and volleyball programs,” Angley-Holman said. “They took their lumps, and she was so proud that the school was now in a spot where we’re playing in these big games and we’re filling out a college arena.” The gym was packed as fans gathered to watch the No. 1 Panthers (28-4) take on No. 2 Oroville (22-8). Related: U-Prep football honors Rochelle Angley, local heroes in first home football game Ms. Angley never made herself the spotlight. Collin Matos leads Redding Christian basketball to NSCIF championship
On Nov. 26, Redding Christian senior Collin Matos caught four passes for 64 yards and a touchdown as the Lions football team defeated Maxwell to win the Northern Section Division V championship . Fast forward just a few months later, Matos found himself in yet another championship ball game, this time with the Lions basketball team. It seems as if Matos lives for the big moments, and his performance reflects that. On Saturday, Feb. 28, playing in front of a large crowd at Shasta College, Matos dropped 24 points to lead Redding Christian past Biggs 56-41 and all the way to a NSCIF Division VI championship — Redding Christian’s second consecutive championship win. Related: Redding Christian basketball finds early season success despite late start Matos has been one of the most dominant scorers in the Northern Section all season long. He scored 40 points in a game against CORE Butte on Feb. 6 and even scored his 1,000th career point this season. If opponents don’t swarm him as soon as he gets the ball behind the arc, he’s letting it fly and it’s more than likely dropping in. “I might be a little biased, but I think he’s the best

Redding Christian girls basketball claims Northern Section title
Before the 2025-26 basketball season started, Redding Christian girls coach Scott Alexander didn’t expect to be in the position in which he is today. “We talked about it at the beginning of the year. I never thought we were a section championship team to be honest,” Alexander said. “But as the season has gone on, I started believing, and it’s been incredible.” But the No. 2 Lions (27-3) exceeded expectations, and they did it in dominant fashion. Redding Christian ended the regular season with only three losses to 24 wins. They added a win against Etna in the second round of the NSCIF playoffs. They added another against Fall River in the semifinals. And, on Saturday, Feb. 28, the Redding Christian girls basketball team defeated Weed, 46-29, to capture the 2026 NSCIF Division VI title. It’s the first time since the 2019-2020 season the Redding Christian girls team has won a Northern Section title. “It’s been just a slow buy-in to the system that they believe in each other. They’re very unselfish,” Alexander said. “Their defense is stellar, elite. I mean, locking down teams, holding them way under their average. I think it’s just about believing in team basketball, and

U-Prep girls basketball advances to third straight NSCIF championship
For the third year in a row, the University Prep girls basketball team is heading to the Northern Section Division IV championship game. While the visiting No. 3 Orland Trojans (19-12) led the No. 2 Panthers (19-8) after the first quarter of the semifinals on Feb. 24, it became clear that it was No. 2 U-Prep’s game to lose after the Panthers jumped out to a 33-15 halftime lead. The Panthers kept their foot on the gas, gradually increasing their lead, until the 57-35 score was final and U-Prep had punched its ticket to the NSCIF championships. For head coach Steven Schuster, it was the performance of the bench unit in the second quarter that really allowed the Panthers to jump out in front of the Trojans. “Our bench came in and did a great job. Maya Lipman lit a spark for us. Hannah Carter has been playing great lately,” Schuster said. “We just got into really good spots, and we had kids who played hard. We’ve got a ton of depth to us, and I think that showed tonight.” Carter specifically came in and made some big plays off the bat. The Panthers were starting to get hot, and

Foothill basketball's 'unsung hero' leads playoff charge, sets up rival rematch
The Foothill boys basketball team has shown time and time again that when things get intense, they rise to the top. The Cougars (15-12) did it over the past few weeks against Shasta, Pleasant Valley and Enterprise as they fought their way to the No. 2 seed heading into the postseason. It only makes sense that when the Cougars faced Red Bluff in the first round of the Division III Northern Section playoffs on Friday, Feb. 20, the third matchup between the two schools this season, Foothill ran away with an early lead and held it until the 65-45 final score was cemented in the books. Over the past few weeks, the Cougars have relied on guards Matt Poulsen and Turner Knowles to take care of the scoring. Senior forward Wyatt Forward has also sprinkled in some dynamic performances. On Friday night, it was the team’s “unsung hero,” Caiden Cochran, who carved up the Spartans (7-22) for a game-high 20 points in the win. “(Cochran) has just been that unsung hero all year,” head coach John Carter said. “He shows up every day. He works his tail off every day. You couldn’t ask for a better kid, and I saw

Shasta supervisor plans new Redding school, seeks section membership
Shasta County Supervisor Kevin Crye has plans to establish a school in Redding that an application says could have up to 200 students enrolled by its third year of operation. Crye’s Northbound Academy applied for membership in the CIF Northern Section , the athletic governing body that high schools in Shasta and surrounding North State counties compete under. The school’s application for admittance was on the Northern Section Board of Managers Feb. 4 meeting agenda. The application for Achor Point, a new school in Weed, also was on the same agenda. Northern Section Commissioner Scott Johnson said the board took no action and the item was tabled to the board’s April 22 meeting because more information was needed for the board to act. The April meeting will be held at the Shasta Union High School District office on Eureka Way in Redding. Reached by text message, Crye, who represents the county’s 1st District and is running for reelection in June, deflected commenting about his plans to start a new school, and instead told a Record Searchlight reporter to report on stories that matter to the community. On the Northern Section application form, Crye lists projected enrollment for the school at
