Swaledale firearm situation resolved, shelter-in-place lifted according to law enforcement
(ABC 6 News) – Law enforcement in Swaledale told ABC 6 News at the scene that a situation involving a person with a firearm has been peacefully resolved. A welfare check Monday, March 4 turned into a mental health crisis in a Swaledale home, Cerro Gordo sheriff Kevin Pals said.
Police: Marshalltown 18-year-old leads officers on high-speed chase across 3 counties
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Central Iowa authorities had help from the air during a high-speed chase Saturday. According to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff's Office, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling an estimated 100 mph in a 35 mph zone in Marshalltown just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

Clear Lake Schools PPEL extension, Swaledale special city election Tuesday
CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake Community School District voters head to the polls tomorrow to decide on the district’s Physical Plant & Equipment Levy. Back in November, voters approved upping the PPEL levy from 67-and-a-half cents to $1.34 per $1000 taxable valuation for the remainder of the currently existing PPEL that sunsets at the end of June 2025. Voters though turned down a second ballot question extending the levy beyond June 2025 and is now bringing the question back to the voters in hopes of extending the levy for another ten years.

Goldfield- Diana Mae Schmidt was born March 19, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of LeRoy J. and Darlene (Novak) Bird. She was the second oldest out of 5 siblings. She graduated from LaSalle Catholic School in Cedar Rapids in 1969. After graduating, Diana enjoyed spending time at the Singles Club with her friends; this is where she met her husband. Diana was united in marriage to Robert Dean Schmidt on June 27, 1975 at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Together they moved to Robert’s family farm west of Williamsburg where she went from city to farm girl. For the next 20 years she enjoyed driving the tractor, milking cows, caring for the hogs and having all of her nieces and nephews out to the farm. In 1991 they were blessed with their daughter, Theresa. They moved their family to Goldfield in 1995.

Panthers Fall in Girls State Basketball Championship
After an incredible season in which the Panorama Panthers went 25-2, with Seniors Tyme Boettcher and Jaidyn Sellers scoring over 1,000 career points, and the Panthers winning their third consecutive regional championship the season for the Lady Panthers comes to an end after falling by 2 to the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines. The battle for the Class 2A State Championship was a defensive battle, with both teams scoring 11 points in the first quarter. The Wolverines came out and took the lead in the second, holding the Panthers to 9 points while scoring another 11. With the score at 22-20 going into the second half, the Panthers battled back in the third quarter scoring 17 points but the could not take the lead as the score was tied 37-37 going into the final quarter. The Panthers fought valiantly but were outscored by the Wolverines 11-9 to ending the Panther season as 2nd place in the Class 2A Girls State tournament.

Grundy Center Man Arrested on Drug Charges
Grundy County authorities have arrested a Grundy Center man on multiple drug and weapon charges after executing a search warrant at his rural home. 20 year old Carter Jacobsen was taken into custody late last week. Deputies found 2 pounds of marijuana, assorted other drug paraphernalia, $8,000 in cash and an AR-15. Jacobsen made his initial appearance, and has been released after posting a surety bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa – For a third straight year, teams from Hampton-Dumont-Cal High School are the kings of Iowa’s culinary mountain. The students were crowned champions for culinary and restaurant management at the 2024 Iowa ProStart® Invitational. They will now represent Iowa at the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, MD, where 400 students from across the country will compete for millions of scholarship dollars and a national championship title.
Fire Captain Died in His Home
The Cedar Falls Fire Department has released that one of its own has died:. Fire Captain Brad Sherwood, age 56, died at his home in Grundy County, Iowa on February 23rd, 2024. The Grundy County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Captain Sherwood joined the Cedar Falls Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1997. Four years later, in 2001, he was hired as a firefighter. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2009. Captain Sherwood served on all of the fire shifts over his decades of service, and he was the department’s subject matter expert in fire truck maintenance and firefighter protective gear. He received many awards and commendations throughout his career and he was honored as the Fire Department’s Fire Officer of the Year for 2015.
Panther Girls Advance To State Basketball Semifinals
Coach Boettecher and the Panorama Panthers had their first game in the Wells Fargo Arena for the 2024 Girls State Basketball Tournament. The Panthers faced off against the Grundy Center Spartans in the Class 2A Quarterfinals, and defeated the Spartans 59-49, advancing the Class 2A semifinals. The Panthers will play again in the semifinals against the Westwood Rebels on Friday with the game starting at 11:45AM.

Rebels Season Ends With Semi-final Loss
Dike-New Hartford defeated Sioux Central 58-44 in a class 2A semi-final game Friday at the girls State Basketball Tournament. The Wolverines used a 50-32 edge in rebounding to help them reach the state title game for the 4th year in a row. They can become only the second team to ever 4-peat as champions (Ankeny won four straight titles from 2002-2005) when they play Panorama Saturday afternoon.

Rowans’s final St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held Saturday, March 16 at 1:30 p.m. starting at the old school. According to Mayor Linnea Groom, “The event began in 2003 when Mike Thompson, Rowan’s resident leprechaun, walked the one block of Main Street in Irish green. Each year a few more bystanders watched, and eventually, parade entries began joining the fun. The parade route was extended. In 2012 the Rowan coffee group walked with Thompson and the event mushroomed.”
