Astoria recognizes historic preservation projects
Historic preservation projects in Astoria were honored during a City Council meeting on Monday night. Mayor Sean Fitzpatrick presented the Dr. Edward Harvey Historic Preservation Award to three recipients. The annual award honors projects and property owners who have made efforts to preserve historic buildings.
Master gardeners hold plant sale and table clinics
The Clatsop County Master Gardener Association is holding a plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. The event features vegetables, assorted color spots, bare root grafted fruit trees and a raffle for goods donated by local businesses and individuals.
Port of Astoria approves settlement with log exporter over pier damage
The Port of Astoria Commission voted Tuesday to approve a settlement agreement with Astoria Forest Products, ending a yearslong legal process with the log exporter. In 2021, the Port filed a lawsuit against the company, a local subsidiary of Murphy Overseas USA, for breach of contract. The suit alleged that the asphalt on Pier 1 and Pier 3 became worn after a decade of log operations and Astoria Forest Products was contractually responsible for repairs.
North Oregon Coast Sympony receives $1,000 grant
The North Oregon Coast Symphony is the recipient of a $1,000 grant from the Clatsop County Cultural Coalition, through the Oregon Cultural Trust. The grant was used to purchase needed percussion equipment, including a snare drum with stand, cymbal with stand, and a triangle, as well as sticks, strikers and mallets.
Astoria FFA chapter places second in district forestry event
The Astoria chapter of the National FFA Organization placed second in the Northwest District Forestry Career Development Event May 1 in Buxton. Students demonstrated their skills in diagnosing forest disorders, managing forests and forest inventory and using problem-solving skills to respond to a forest industry scenario. The team also provided a presentation about a national or regional forestry issue.
Unsealed records renew interest in cold case
Unsealed records in the missing persons case of Joan Leigh Hall have sparked renewed interest in the 1983 disappearance of the Warrenton High School senior. Dean Andal, the businessman and former California assemblyman who petitioned Clatsop County Circuit Court to lift a protective order in place since 2018, has been studying the hundreds of pages of notes, interviews and police reports released by the sheriff’s office.
Local teams win heavyweight fights on the diamond
Monday was a golden day on the diamond for local teams and their fans. Warrenton High School baseball and Astoria High School softball had heavyweight battles, while the second round of the Clatsop Clash took place in Seaside. McGrorty brothers carry Warrenton over the finish line.

Leadership transition planned at Astoria Senior Center
Larry Miller, who has served as the executive director of the Astoria Senior Center for over a decade, will be stepping down from his role.
