Public feedback meeting held for proposed Keweenaw emergency operations center
EAGLE RIVER, Mich. (WLUC) - Keweenaw County residents gathered in Eagle River Wednesday evening for a feedback meeting on the county’s proposed emergency operations center. The meeting, held at the county courthouse, was headed up by the county sheriff’s office, the Nature Conservancy of Michigan and the Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF). All three collaborated to apply for a $50,000 Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Rural Readiness Grant that is funding planning events for this project.

According to the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, almost all trails south of Calumet are exposed and unrideable. And from Calumet to Copper Harbor, packed snow has managed to weather the weather. Despite this, the club has not been able to do grooming on any trails since last Saturday.

Not very good news to report. Our trails are in very poor shape with little to no snow for a base. They are calling for snow tomorrow and Wednesday but back in the 40’s on Saturday. Unfortunately March is not looking any better for trail riding. It’s definitely been a season for the record books that I never want to beat.

Task force seeks public comment on plan to protect Lake Superior's Buffalo Reef
UPPER PENINSULA — On Jan. 30, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources released its Buffalo Reef Task Force alternatives analysis for public comment. The analysis assesses the final options selected as ways to dispose of stamp sands that are threatening valuable fish spawning and rearing habitat in and around the 2,200-acre Buffalo Reef, situated off the eastern coast of the Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula.

Travel has quickly deteriorated around the South Shore and Head of Lake Superior this morning due to lake effect snow. Scattered snow showers stay in these areas through the morning and into the afternoon with a widespread dusting and 1-2″ possible locally. It’s a day where the high temperature was set overnight and temps fall through the day behind a cold front. Duluth observed a temp of 34° at midnight, and it will continue to tumble through the morning and hover around 20° for much of the day.
