It is over halfway through the high school baseball season, so it is the perfect time to take a look at where the six Gardner-area teams stand. With one Colonial Athletic League team and five from the Mid-Wach, let's check out how those teams are faring.

    Oakmont Regional

After starting 10-0, the Oakmont baseball team recently suffered its first and second losses of the season with a 4-3 setback at Wachusett and a 1-0 defeat at Hopkinton.

Some of the Spartans' more notable wins include a 4-3 triumph over Clinton and a 6-4 win against Western Mass. powerhouse Pioneer Valley. The Spartans also played a strong game against Wachusett, as Jonny Losordo's RBI single keyed a two-run rally that tied the game in the seventh inning. Losordo, Levi Hessell and Will Gage (double) all had two hits for Oakmont, which ultimately saw its unbeaten campaign end in the 11th inning.

The Spartans are ranked second in Div. 3 in the most recent power rankings from the MIAA. They remain undefeated in league play, leading Mid-Wach C. Oakmont has a very strong roster and is seeing contributions from a variety of players on the roster.

Ben Forbes, Sam Curtis, Levi Hessel, Johnny Losordo and Ty Curtis are a handful of those players who have been successful so far this season, whether it be making plays in the field or doing their job at the plate.

    Narragansett Regional

With four wins in their last five games, the Warriors have turned their season around to get back to .500 (6-6) after a 2-5 start. Joey Pineyro (.656 BA, HR, 12 RBIs; 14 Ks in 12.2 IP), Charlie Ogonowski (.438 BA, 7-for-16; 27 Ks, 4.92 ERA in 15.2 IP) and Michael Casavant (.382 BA, 13 RBIs) have been major contributors for Narragansett.

Highlights so far this season include a 7-6 win over West Boylston and 7-5 against Gardner in which Pineyro totaled 10 strikeouts.

    Monty Tech

Monty Tech is 5-3 with a few weeks remaining in the regular season, winning three of its last four after a 2-2 start.

Most recently, in a 3-1 home win over a strong Blackstone Valley Tech team, Kyle Pernaa hit an RBI double in the first innin and Luke Albero delivered a run with a second-inning single.

    Quabbin

The Panthers are 4-7 but sit at the bottom of the Mid Wach C with an 0-6 mark in league play. Quabbin has struggled against some of these top opponents but found wins against Narragansett (10-6), Worcester North (17-5) and defeated Gardner twice (9-3 and 12-5).

Ian Haupt is hitting .389 with 11 RBIs for Quabbin, while Finn Leander has a 1.05 ERA on the mound with 18 strikeouts and six walks in 13.1 innings. Adam Adams (23 IP), Martin Stoddard (15 IP) and Chase Talbot (12.1) have been the other contributing arms on the pitching staff.

    Gardner

Although Gardner is struggling in its first varsity season after its hiatus, the team has been able to accomplish a number of positives in a growing and developing year. At 1-11, the Wildcats got their first win on April 23 against Mohawk Trail, 6-3. They have also improved in scoring, putting up runs against some of their tougher competition.

Miguel Batista leads Gardner with a .333 batting average (8-for-24), while Camden Gamache is hitting .313 (10-for-32) and Andrew Beauregard is batting .310.

    Murdock

At 0-10, the Blue Devils are still looking for their first victory of the season. The team is optimistic, as they have noticed growth and improvement over the course of the past few weeks. Mark Quinn and Steven Gauthier are two of Murdock's main senior leaders who are helping to push the team toward success.
