More people are entering the workforce as Alabama continues to recover from the Covid pandemic, experts say, and that’s nudging up the unemployment rate. The Birmingham metro’s unemployment rate was 3.1% in February, per the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a small uptick from January’s 3%, and up from 2.3% in February last year.
Birmingham man convicted of fentanyl related drug crime
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A jury has convicted a man of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute fentanyl after one day of testimony. According to evidence presented at trial, Demarcus Hill and his co-defendant, JT Toombs, drove from Birmingham to Atlanta where they picked up over 2000 fentanyl pills to bring back to Birmingham. An Oxford Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on Interstate 20. His canine detected the odor of narcotics, and after searching the vehicle, the officer found the fentanyl pills.
