MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Montgomery County Fire and Rescue System (MCFRS) said a man who was allegedly laying in the road was run over by a car in Gaithersburg Tuesday morning.

Crews said it happened around 8 a.m. on E. Diamond Avenue, between Park Avenue and Russell Avenue which was shut down.

The man was transported to the hospital.

Cars told first responders they did not see the man due to the bright sunshine glare.

Priscilla Anderson still has many questions about the collision. She says that goes along with the many concerns she’s already had for years about activity she’s witnessed on this stretch of East Diamond Avenue.

“They speed,” Anderson said. “Nobody’s doing the speed limit. You got people walking around sometimes drunk, don’t know where they’re at. A lot of people don’t speak English so if something happens, they can’t communicate.”

Anderson says some cars go as fast as two-times the posted 30 mph speed limit. She says she doesn’t feel safe walking in the area, and she worries for her 12-year-old daughter’s safety as well.

“The cars go too fast,” she said. “I just started letting her go to the bus stop by herself.”

Anderson says for such a busy road, there’s no way for people cross the street safely.

“There’s no crosswalks for the pedestrians to get across,” she said. “So, if you look around here, there’s nothing. If they want to go over to this business, they just jog across the street and come back.”

She hoping several roadway improvements will be considered following Tuesday’s accident.

“I think they should put speed bumps in Old Towne,” Anderson said. “That will slow down the traffic flow of everybody going really fast and not paying attention to the speed limit.”

DC News Now has reached out to MCFRS for an update on the status of the man who was run over but did not hear back in time for publication.
