GACKLE ND ( KXNET ) —The North Dakota Council on the Arts has selected James Culleton to create an art installation to represent the Arts Across the Prairie: Placemaking in Rural North Dakota ‘s Region 6 project titled – “Flyways, Byways, & Waterways.”

After receiving more than 35 initial applications from artists and creative teams, a committee of stakeholders, community members, and artists conducted two rounds of reviews and online interviews. Finalists submitted proposals complete with concept renderings/drawings and estimated budgets.

The installation will be located on a plot of land on the border of Stutsman and Logan Counties, near Gackle, ND.

As Culleton was preparing his submission for this project, he “imagined the ever-changing prairie, whether that was receding glaciers, birds and animals migrating or the nomadic people and immigrants on the move. To me the ‘movement’ was not only physical but also very much about the passage of time.”

“I see this project as an opportunity to contribute to the cultural fabric of the community of North Dakota and to collaborate on a new, exciting art installation,” Culleton continued. “I’m interested in exploring how ‘Flyways, Byways, & Waterways’ could support my past work, clearly focusing on the subjects of rural community history, their people and their stories.”

Culleton will make an extended site visit in August 2024 to gather information and prepare for fabrication. During the visit, the public will be invited to a Community Gathering where they can meet the artist, ask questions, and learn more about the project.

Details on this gathering will be revealed at a later time.
